If there is one lesson to draw from the history of fascism in the interwar period in Europe, it is this:

Democracy falls if and when mainstream conservatives and centrist/center-right elites decide to make common cause with extremists because they consider the “radical Left” the more acute threat.
“The New York Times collaborated with a white nationalist eugenicist hacker and agreed to keep his identity a secret to publish a Zohran Mamdani hit piece” is a way bigger story than “18 year old Zohran Mamdani ticked ‘African American’ on his Columbia application because he was a citizen of Uganda”

I am old enough to remember when a movie character said "PAPERS PLEASE" it was a universally understood signifier of an evil regime
A co-worker of mine (who is a judge), traveled by train from Montana to North Dakota for work this week. The train made a stop in Havre, MT, where ICE agents—armed and dressed in full military-style tactical gear—boarded the train.

This is our Gestapo.
One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind.

An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one."

The other said, "Take him anyway."

So they did.

Last night, Trump promised he wouldn't touch Medicaid.

This morning, Trump endorsed the House Republican plan to slash Medicaid.

It's smoke and mirrors: Trump and Republicans are plotting to take away health care from millions of people to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.
Trump said in an interview with Elon Musk that he wouldn't touch Medicaid. Hours later he endorsed a GOP plan that could slash the program.
Donald Trump said he would "love and cherish" Medicaid. He's endorsed a House GOP proposal that would likely gut the program.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk going after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau tells you everything you need to know about their priorities.

Instead of lowering prices on "day one" as Trump said, he's raising costs on families by letting Wall Street cheat them.
