An interactive map of Census data from start-to-finish in 10 minutes.

For #30DayMapChallenge Day 13: 10 minute map, I recorded an impromptu, unedited tutorial on how to find and map Census tract-level data using R and Positron.

A national cohort study in France shows no association between mRNA COVID-19 vaccine received in the first trimester & congenital defects in babies. This adds to previous national studies that reported similar outcomes.

Kennedy is wrong, as usual.

Interesting new tool from the Chicago Fed. Forecasting consistent or slight increase in unemployment. We'll see once the September jobs report is published.

Who'd have thought
The current administration has claimed renewables are making the grid less reliable. If that were the case, I'd expect states adding the most renewables over the past decade to have the largest increase in outages.

However, the opposite seems to be true!

This is, in fact, not news and has been known for a long time.
Researchers have found that inactivity is not the main cause of obesity. A new study published this week offers the best ways, in the long run, to avoid and treat obesity.
What causes obesity? A major new study is upending common wisdom.
Many people assume obesity is caused by inactivity and burning fewer calories. But our diets — and excess calorie intake — may actually be the cause.

Next week, I’m teaching my Digital Cartography with R course at @cchscsic.bsky.social with @lippertam.bsky.social!

To kick things off, here’s a bivariate map showing the percentage of foreign-born pop & ethnic diversity by census tracts—beautifully clipped over Madrid’s buildings.

In the United States, geographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau is essential for practitioners in countless fields.

I've been maintaining the tigris #rstats package for a decade. It gives you immediate access to Census boundary files - often in a single line of code.
