Thank you @geoffreybunting.bsky.social ! Glad this 80s kid was able to help out.
Thanks to the many people who spoke to me for this, especially around contextualising 80s horror (I was born in the 90s, folks). But especially @mikduffy.bsky.social @lindsayhallam.bsky.social @bosd.bsky.social @daviddemchuk.com @redheadfrommars.bsky.social @philnobilejr.bsky.social

Thanks to everyone who came to see Jaws at Genesis Cinema and listened to my intro. I talked about Spielberg's origins in New Hollywood of the 70s, how Jaws led to the rise of the blockbuster and other ways it impacted pop culture. The film on the big screen still plays like gangbusters.

The good folks at @scifrightspod.bsky.social have their first guest! Unfortunately, their options were limited, so it's me. But if you wanna here me, @liamdunn82.bsky.social and @lindsayhallam.bsky.social dig into the entire Terminator franchise, smash that link.

Woke up this morning with an awful cold, so have to miss the last day of Frightfest. Really gutted. Was so looking forward to seeing the new Adams family film Mother of Flies, Sick Puppy, and the new Alice Maio Mackay film Serpent's Skin. 😩😩😩

FrightFest Film #12: Redux Redux. A revenge thriller with a SF premise -what if you could kill the person who wronged you over and over again across the multiverse?- it manages to stay grounded, mostly due to its low tech aesthetic and the excellent perfs of the 2 female leads. The best of the fest.
August 25, 2025 at 10:09 AM
FrightFest Film #11 : Bone Lake. A booking mixup sees two couples share the same rental, bringing temptations and trust issues to the surface. A twisty turny erotic thriller that erupts into carnage, this was much better than I was expecting.

FrightFest Film #10 - The Descent. First time seeing the film on the big screen in a new 4K restoration and it looked incredible. "That shot" still gets me every fucking time.
August 25, 2025 at 10:06 AM
FrightFest Film #9: Jimmy & Stiggs A down on his luck filmmaker on a seemingly neverending bender is abducted by aliens & enlists his newly sober friend to help prepare in case they return. The whole film is a loud & unrelenting assault on the senses, drenched in neon lighting & awash in alien blood

FrightFest Film #7 The Red Mask. Really enjoyed this meta slasher. Manages to deconstruct horror tropes while also delivering the requisite thrills, taking welcome potshots at toxic horror fandom (sorry dudes, horror has always been woke!)
August 24, 2025 at 10:33 AM
FrightFest Film #6 The Toxic Avenger. Sweet and so much fun. Keeps a lot of the spirit of the original. And nice to see director Macon Blair in a cameo sporting an Ain't Rights t-shirt (which I guess means there is a Toxie/Green Room shared universe?).
August 23, 2025 at 9:25 AM
FrightFest Film #5 Transcending Dimensions. I can't even really begin to describe this film. Sensory, spiritual and totally mind-blowing on the big screen.
August 23, 2025 at 9:21 AM
FrightFest Film #4 The Degenerate: The Life & Films of Andy Milligan. I went along to this to learn something and I did: Milligan was a singular filmmaker, fiercely determined but clearly hard to get along with, caught in a trap that allowed him to be prolific but never advance in budget or respect
August 23, 2025 at 9:18 AM
FrightFest Film #3: Dog of God. This fucking RIPS. A Latvian medieval heavy metal pagan hallucinogenic folk horror fairy tale. Full of fluids and phalluses, witches and werewolves, accompanied by a throbbing soundtrack.
August 23, 2025 at 9:14 AM
FrightFest Film #2: Cogn-AI-tive. An AI company must contend with its creation taking on a life of its own.The threat of AI taking our lives as well as our livelihoods plays to current anxieties but the film itself feels indebted to the 80s and 90s - think Hackers meets Chopping Mall.
August 23, 2025 at 9:12 AM
FrightFest Opening Film - The Home. Pete Davidson stars in a non-comic role as a young man forced into community service at a retirement home, where things soon reveal themselves as 'not quite right'. Very predictable with clichéd scares (and A LOT of dream sequences) derivative of much better films
