Reporting on what goes on on librarian listservs: The group is "onto something" (someone quoting Mel Gibson in What Women Want), that there is a plot by DOGE collaborating with Russia to start an astroturf campaign against the Library of Congress because of a rumor that the books are moldy
Currently texting with my boomer accountant about his trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum--he liked it!

Someone just suggested that I publish a chapter of my dissertation and the idea of even looking at the cursed document makes me want to cry

FYI it's more nuanced than that
My wife wrote her dissertation on how books do have a tech tree
books have no tech tree, no fog of war

As a Jew who went to Cornell, it is completely insane to me that Cornell could be in anyway construed as anti-semitic. Like 1/5 of everyone I knew were Jews from Westchester (like me), Manhattan, Long Island, and Northern Jersey, and I never once felt discriminated against.
Breaking News: Cornell University reached an agreement with the Trump administration that would restore hundreds of millions in funding to the university. It's expected to pay a $30 million fine to the government and to invest $30 million in agriculture and farming programs.
Cornell Reaches Deal with Trump Administration to Restore Research Funds
The Ivy League university had warned of layoffs after the Trump administration stripped it of funds this year. The cuts were among the deepest in higher education.

Three of Cornell's colleges and one of the graduate programs are land grant colleges meaning that they are subsidized by the state and in-state residents get reduced tuition
how much in state funding does Cornell receive from New York and why should it not be $0
BREAKING: Cornell caved.

Here is the settlement agreement, signed today by the university's president, Michael Kotlikoff: statements.cornell.edu/2025/documen...

Print was invented in the 1450s and the TYW started in 1618, but I get what you're saying
Relatedly: why did the thirty years war follow the invention of the printing press
“Why has virtually every country in the world seen an abrupt rise in extremist politics, especially on the far-right, starting at approximately the same date the iPhone was released”

The most important question in politics but maybe not a hard one

Uh oh...I have one book out that I can't find in my extremely messy office......
Just returned the last of the library books from my dissertation. The only thing left is to receive the tuition refund because I submitted my dissertation early and then I'm DONE.

In fairness, though, I am currently sitting at the University's library, have research and borrowing privileges, and am on the amazing health insurance, so am I really gone?

Meh, the ending was so-so
Half-way through the Wedding People by Alison Espach and I can't recommend it more. Not enough books about people who are relatably bad at academia, imo
