On this day in 1949, Tom Longboat died.
One of Canada's greatest marathon runners, he won the Boston Marathon in 1907. He also served as a dispatch runner during the entire First World War.

For four decades, she wrote a sports column for the Montreal Star to promote women's sports.
She was involved in 11 Olympic Games and was called the First Lady of Sports.

Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith-Johannsen came to Canada and popularized cross-country skiing and ski jumping. He blazed many trails and even learned to speak Cree.
On top of that, he lived to 111 and was the oldest person on Earth for 22 days.

Called Iceman for his calm demeanor in races, he won 97 major stakes before his life was tragically cut short.
His 1938 victory with Seabiscuit over War Admiral remains legendary.

A former nurse, she helped guide the Eaton's company, fundraised for many causes and helped many. For this she was called Mrs. Canada.

Anderson Abbott was not only the first Canadian-born Black person to graduate from medical school.
He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, fought segregation and was one of the first Black persons to attend a reception at the White House.

On this day in 1913, Lou Jacobi was born in Toronto. After starting his acting career on Broadway in the 1950s, he appeared in many films over the next four decades.
He has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame and was a voice inspiration for Dr. Zoidberg on Futurama.
He died in 2009.
