this is maybe trite at this point but it is in your interest to find ways to create things. basically everyone wants you to be consuming nonstop. making stuff, from cooking to photography or whatever, can help you feel more in control. doesn’t even have to be something you share with other people

And let me quietly laud the human translators who manage to translate beautiful prose into beautiful prose *in another language*.

One of my heroes is Claus Beck who translated AS Byatt into Danish - incl. the faux Victorian poetry. Astounding work.

If anyone still thinks MT is somewhat decent for narrative games just because there's a ton of dialogue and descriptions, read this dissection by @katrinal10n.bsky.social of an AI-translated game. tl;dr: 👑context & culture👑 are kryptonite to machines. (Flashbacks to anime fansubs rushing releases)
At least DLsite is honest about the quality of their AI localization.

The "most accurate" translation is not always the most appropriate translation.

We don't translate in a vacuum - we take into account a myriad of things such as the context the text appears in, the game's tone, the speaker's personality, limited interface space, specific client demands...
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Most translators aren't taught how to translate, they mostly learn on the job.

BUT just because someone knows two languages, doesn't mean they can translate. It's still a skill one needs to learn.

Unless you seek it out, most professors don't learn how to teach. It's not part of the job requirements. The idea is that you're an expert in your field and that's Enough.

The situation in gamedev/gameloc is pretty depressing, so all I can do is keep supporting devs however I can, do my job the best I can, and be extra thankful to everyone who supports me 🌦️

This is depressing.
My heart goes out to the authors who poured their heart and soul into their writing and will be led to believe that this is a good way to reach new audiences. It isn't.

This is what we've been advocating for since FtV's creation: always localize, never transliterate. As written by John Scalzi: "a human translator will give you the feel. The feel is what makes fiction work."
