I think it’s hard for Kids Today to grasp that up to the mid 90s if you were gay your representation was a villain or a punchline, legal protection was next to nothing, and your normal state was closeted.

Furry was one of the few fandoms where folk could just BE queer, out in the open.

Weirdly, for a kids from the Midwest, a lot of the friends I made in Furry Fandom at the start were queer. This being the late 80’s there was not a lot of gay representation in Michigan at the time.
