The downside of being super into animation is that while I am often mind-blown by cuts on a technical level, I've seen so much good animation at this point that I don't often get that jaw-on-the-floor frisson feeling anymore. This movie got me to feel that multiple times. It is astonishing.

I wasn't a hater of Nakayama's S1 direction - while it absolutely wasn't the right approach for a manga like CSM, I thought it was largely successful on its own terms. Yoshihara just gets CSM though - seeing the manga's spirit rendered 1:1 here was mind-blowing and I can't go back now. It's perfect.
