You failed. As a Leader. As a Whip. Leave leadership and seriously consider retiring from the Senate as you have only proven the only thing you are good at is NOT rising to the occasion.

Pretty sure the fix was in from the start. The exact number of votes needed. No one with an election in 2026 unless they were retiring. As Max Kennerly said:

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.
Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.

The Republican majority is tight. There aren't a lot of votes there, so it'll be up to Trump to threaten them.

result of pandering to the authoritarian followers to maintain power.
They follow Trump's lead, but they also like the leaders of Hungary and Russia because they like authoritarian leaders in general. It wasn't a big ask, now that "Communism" isn't an external threat.

and you see the shift of the evidence-based component of the Republican party away from them in 2006, so the "Tea Party" backlash is a direct reflection of them having the power in the party to determine where it goes.
It took a long time to get here, maybe 60 years, but this was the inevitable

My point is that's who the base of the Republican party is, and has been for probably over two decades.
It's filled with probably all of the authoritarian followers in the US, the people they've been courting since the early 60s.
W and 9/11 activated them in ways we hadn't seen before
