My article "Moral Attention and Bad Sentimentality" is up (OA)! Good news: country music and chick-flicks are fine! Bad sentimentality involves not just a retreat from difficult realities (kids growing up, hometowns changing) but an unwillingness to come back down to earth when it counts #philsky
Moral Attention and Bad Sentimentality - The Journal of Ethics
In this paper, I challenge standard views of the moral badness of sentimentality defended by art critics and philosophers. Accounts based on untruthfulness and self-indulgence lack the resources to bo...

This was fun to record! We discuss Murdoch's early 1950s contributions to the philosophy of mind, Gilbert Ryle, and themes of privacy, interiority, "the real", and individuality in her work.

I miss the good old days when taking a sick day just meant getting someone to cover my shift at the restaurant.
There's no one to cover my shift at the philosophy factory.

Have philosophers written about fun? Not pleasure, play, or humour-- but having fun, finding fun, doing things just for fun. My search only turned up 2 sources (McKee, Chakrabarti)

Philosophers are sommeliers of language. I spend so much of my days mulling over words, taste-testing synonyms, assessing pairings of concepts and qualifying phrases, etc.

(Collingwood was right that philosophical clarity is served when we "go to school with the poets").

Exciting news! This free to download text does a wonderful job exploring @irismurdoch.bsky.social 's views on the value of the individual as a commitment to the spirit (rather than the dominant post-WII form) of Liberalism

My phd supervisor once told me to stop writing to preempt attacks from imagined interlocutors so dense and uncharitable they could barely be credited with reading. It was liberating.
"Teaching of philosophy ... tends to implant in philosophers an intimidatingly nit-picking superego, a blend of their most impressive teachers and their most competitive colleagues, which guides their writing by means of constant anticipations of guilt and shame." Bernard Williams
