Biographer & philosopher, not necessarily in that order. ✍️ LYDIA MARIA CHILD: A RADICAL AMERICAN LIFE. Bylines in WaPo, WSJ, BoGlobe. OUP Handbook of 19C women philosophers is out! Current project: women pacifists philosophizing in the early 20th century.

Reintroducing myself to 🦋 via my 2022 bio of American abolitionist Lydia Maria Child. I wrote this book in response to the 2016 election. Her example of resilience and dedication is more relevant than ever. If you are looking for inspiration in this moment, I humbly recommend you give LMC a try!
A little philosophical trash-talking at the #Berlin #Mauerpark #Flohmarkt used book stall yesterday. . . #Wittgenstein confesses that crime novels distract him from philosophy; #Sartre confesses to preferring crime novels to Wittgenstein.

If you are in #Boston, highly recommend this new play by @patrickgabridge.bsky.social. I got to consult some on his powerful evocation of the vexed friendship bn #abolitionists Lydia Maria Child & Maria Weston Chapman--so timely for imagining political reform!

Also loved visiting the House of #Rousseau and Literature in #Geneva, found in the building where he was born. The installation is historically informative but lively and thought-provoking, highlighting how Rousseau helps interrogate modern life. I think he would approve.

George Eliot's #Geneva window. She translated #Spinoza here! I don't know if the apartment included a room of her own, but she does now have a street of her own.

True story: when I published my first book on #Hegel, my contract stipulated that I would get 0% royalties unless my book was made into a film. That was 14 years ago … will Werner never answer my emails??

Had the privilege of researching some women #pacifists in the United Nations archive in #Geneva last week. Wonderfully inspiring…plus the #UN has its own resident peacock!

Stop 3 on my Peace Tour—#Geneva, where women like #Nobel Peace Prize winners Jane #Addams and Emily #Balch helped establish the Women’s International League for #Peace and Freedom, which still thrives today. Thanks to @wilpf.bsky.social for welcoming me and answering my questions on the 4th floor!

I found this exhibit on Thomas #Mann’s study in #Zurich really moving—full of items he brought with him into exile to keep the continuity that would allow him to write. Including his ink supply! #thomasmann #germanlit

St Peter’s Church in #Zurich where Mary Church #Terrell, the only Black delegate to the 1919 Women’s #Peace Congress, gave a key address urging delegates to include the end of lynching in the US as part of their vision of peace. Also: more mountains!

Good morning #Zurich! And here is the hotel where Jane #Addams, Helene #Stöcker, Mary Church #Terrell & others gathered in 1919 to fight for women to be allowed to contribute to post #WWI #peace negotiations. The hotel serves aa mean Apfelstrudel!

Andrew #Carnegie’s Peace Palace in the #Hague—a stop on my trip researching The Women’s Peace Congress of 1915. That congress did not take place in the Palace—it was too small for the 1000+ women who came—but its complex history plays a role in their story too.

I am collecting creative European bathroom door signs. This one in The #Hague caught my attention. I guess they didn’t like the movie? (Yes, there was a corresponding #Ken door)

I am on what I am calling my #Peace Tour 2025–following in the footsteps of early 20C women #pacifists. First stop: The #Hague, where 1000+ women gathered in 1915 to use #philosophy and international law to envision the end of #WWI.

This is fantastic--congratulations! Can't wait for the English translation soon. The more Unruly Women, in all languages, the better. #womeninphilosophy
Finally! Rebellinnen der Philosophie is here in a gorgeous translation by Sarah Schmitt. Thanks to the editors at ‪@eichbornverlag.bsky.social‬ for the work they put into this. Next up: the English transl., Unruly Women, @uchicagopress.bsky.social.

Arrived in #Berlin so lucky to have a #Fulbright to research Helene Stöcker, a #19C #philosopher who used her passion for #Nietzsche to become an internationally famous #feminist and #pacifist. Look who I encountered at my first flea market. I call this photo "Nietzsche in China." @philsky

Weighing in at 827 pages and 2 1/4 inches, our Oxford Handbook of American and British Women Philosophers in the 19th Century is HERE! Huge thanks to @oupphilosophy.bsky.social and our 50+ authors. Restoring women to the philosophical canon is a matter of justice, but it is also better scholarship!

Melissa Hortman had received a degree in #philosophy from BU. My heart goes out especially to her children
"The entire BU community grieves the loss of one of our cherished alumnae, Melissa Hortman, who was a beloved and respected public servant. We send deep condolences to her family, her friends, and to the people of Minnesota on this tragic and saddest of days." - President Melissa Gilliam
