I’m allergic to academic workshop questions that begin with a 7-minute TED Talk, a 3-minute literature review, two personal anecdotes, and then land gently on: “So… have you considered reading this book? I haven’t read it, but the introduction looks good.”

I listened to this @herplacepod.bsky.social episode with @lydiamoland.bsky.social on Helene Stöcker and I'm fascinated. She became obsessed with Nietzsche, but instead of accepting N's misogyny, she asked what values were life-affirming for women, and created a Nietzschean feminism.

My copy of The Prince was a victim of the great water bottle explosion of 2019. On the day of the soaking, when I arrived at another (non-Machiavelli related) philosophy class, my professor said: ‘This is a sign that you ought to stop reading that rubbish.’ What calamity awaits me on this read?

My heart is so heavy. To see such devastating violence unfold in my beautiful home, Sydney, is deeply painful.

Thank you to those who stepped forward in moments of fear, including Ahmed El-Ahmed whose selflessness reminds us that even in the darkest moments, humanity shines through. 🤍

Loved talking to @juliettemarchant.bsky.social about the complicated life and philosophy of Helene Stöcker. Her #feminism was radical, her #pacifism was uncompromising, her vision for human flourishing was hugely problematic. Lots to think about.

"In a New York Times essay last April, Summers lamented that the University had “repeatedly failed to impose discipline and maintain order.” If Summers won’t step aside voluntarily, Harvard should take his advice — and begin by disciplining him."
👏👏
"By any consistent standard, if Summers is unfit to work for each of these institutions [from which he resigned], he is equally unfit to teach at our school. Harvard should not be the only institution in America where Summers remains above reproach."

Summers should choose the most straightforward path and resign. Should he refuse to, though, the University must cut ties with its former president to the greatest extent possible.
