Devin Kelly's "The Old Catcher Considers the Failing of His Knees" is one of my favorite poems. It hangs on my wall.

"...I don’t get it. How what you love can kill you,
even if you spend your whole life loving it.
Even if you love it small. Even if you curl up in its palm..."

On this day in 1886, “Smokey Joe” Williams was born in Seguin, TX. One of the best pitchers of his era, he was also one of the most feared with his 6’4” frame. Ty Cobb stated that he would have been a 30-game winner in MLB. Here’s a color study of him with the Lincoln Giants in 1912.

40000 days ago (October 3, 1915), Detroit’s Ty Cobb steals his 96th and final base of the season, a mark that nobody will come anywhere near until Maury Wills steals 104 in 1962.

Cobb’s Jungaleers win their 100th game of the season, becoming the first team ever to win 100 and not win the pennant.

THERE. I DID IT. I REMEMBERED WELL. by Devin Kelly
I remember the nights when I would sneak a cigarette out the window, walk a lap around the block & tell myself I was alone when I wasn’t. I remember the way you said it – empathy for your future self…

@colemk.bsky.social I went to the Hall of Fame in August 2020, and was hoping to see Nakken’s batting helmet. Was surprised to see her jersey from Opening Day 2020 in the #SFGiants locker display. Cool that she has multiple items there!

I know everyone has read a lot about torpedo bats lately, but in addition to the silliness, I think this article has some really good insights from some very smart people.

Here’s my painting of Dorothy Kamenshek obliging a young fan at Beyer Stadium in 1947. A seven-time All-Star and two-time batting champion, “Kammie” was one of the best players in the history of the AAGPBL, as well as the face of the Rockford Peaches. Hopefully I did her justice.

Here’s my painting of the great Jean Faut with the South Bend Blue Sox in 1949. Probably the best pitcher in the history of the AAGPBL, in her career she pitched 2 perfect games, 2 no-hitters, won the triple crown twice and won 20 games 3 times. Absolutely LOVED painting this.
