Your Cards of the Day: Earl Battey endorsed Rawlings mits and was one their advisory board. Earl's 1964 and 1967 cards feature different web styles but both are "Heart of the Hide" Professional models. The close-ups are from photos of Battey and provide better detail. @sabrbbcards.bsky.social

Charlie Hough's Birthday Celebration, Part the Deux:
A few years ago, it was A Thing to write on the @sabrbbcards.bsky.social blog about your 10 favorite cards of a player.
I chose Charlie, or perhaps he chose me.
Some of the post makes me wince now but I still dig the cards:
Ten for the Butterfly King: Charlie Hough’s top ten cards
Inspired by the recent Top Ten card countdowns for Steve Garvey and Eric Davis. Here at the SABR Baseball Card Blog, we never, ever do nuthin’ nice, and easy … we always do it nice, and…

1992 was kinda mythical when I was a kid, couldn't find it all in Calgary when I was teenager and was genuinely surprised how common it was once eBay came around. 1991 has what is now my fave weirdo subset of minor league MVPs that look like Alex Colville paintings.

I do not, but I do know that 1989 was my least favorite. The size annoyed me as a 10 year old and it annoys me as a 46 year old.

89 and 90 are pretty dire photo-wise. 91 has some fun stuff with the silver slugger awards and Rickey Henderson highlight (and some horrible stuff with the "art" MVP cards). But I probably lean 92 with the 90s fashion.

In my perfect world, Bowman and Stadium Club would have been a single set. 1953 Bowman design paired with SC-quality photos.

For the most part, 89B pics were far worse than standard Topps set. Still, by today’s RC rules, I’ll offer that the 89 Bowman Griffey is his only true rookie card. 😜

The designs aren't great, the photography wasn't great, but the first 3 years were fun at the time because they came out mid-season and functioned as a semi-update. I guess since I own a complete set of 89B I should pick that one as a favorite

Two more for the Yankees collection.

I needed the El Duque card & I was prepared to obnoxiously overbid but fortunately no one else felt the same way. The man was the epitome of a big game pitcher.

Your Cards of the Day: Looking for a new personal collection idea? I suggest the career run of minor league general manager Ed Holtz. Note his odd brown windbreaker with the Mariners' logo. Ed's last two cards have photos taken from space. @sabrbbcards.bsky.social

FAMILY AFFAIR. Sons of comic actor Joe E. Brown, Pirates GM Joe L. Brown brought two championships to Pittsburgh (1960, 1971), and producer/network exec M.J. Frankovich helped bring the Raiders to Los Angeles. Both have fairly difficult baseball cards. #CardSky
