When I was a kid my Mom had a crush on Reggie Smith (though she might not have characterized it that way), the local team’s center fielder. Anyhow, I can see her point?

The interesting discussion with respect to the Dodgers signing Tucker is what it means to the upcoming season for various teams but I have to wade through a lot of raw sewage to find it.

When I got an alert on my phone I thought they'd signed Eugenio Suarez, but I prefer this move.
Initial story on the Red Sox agreeing to a five-year, $130 million deal with lefty Ranger Suarez -- a move that gives the team a deeper rotation (and a lot of depth from which to trade) amidst an ongoing push to add more offense. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/01/14/s...
Red Sox sign free agent lefthander Ranger Suárez to five-year, $130 million contract - The Boston Globe
Though Suárez has never been a workhorse, he’s averaged 26 starts and 147 innings since moving into the rotation on a full-time basis four years ago.

The Thames. (No, not that one.)
My favorite Twitter prompt was "RT this with your home river," so reskeet this with your home river.

Mine is the Patuxent.

British police have killed fewer people in the last 100 years than American police kill in an average month.

Policing in America is an ongoing tragedy.

There has been talk of late around @sabrbbcards.bsky.social about how one could reduce their collection. I’m just going to ask: could you reach a point when certain cards without monetary or personal value would be simply … thrown out? (Or, as an Oregonian, placed in the recycling bin.)

The career WAR on this cover is off the charts. (My first “job”, several years after this issue appeared, was delivering TV Guide door-to-door.)

I’m not really shocked when a child rapist, white supremacist demagogue attacks a foreign country, nor will I be shocked when his Evangelical base cheers him on again. Everyone is just being themselves. My shocked days are long gone.

I don’t usually get this much mail after a week away but I’ll live.

When my kids were young I had memorized “Go, Dog. Go!” to the extent that I would still ask “Do You Like My Hat?” well into their teen years, including in front of their friends. Now that I have an 18-month old grandson I am saddling back up.

Currently sitting bored in a parking lot in Ogden, Utah. Still, I suspect Frank Robinson’s summer of 1953 was worse.

Most gratifying (non-family) happening for my 2025 was the launch of the Satchel Paige Project. A work in progress, I have logged 1,909 games thus far. (I have another 145 as "plausible".) If you have questions, ideas, or wish to help, let me know!

Please consider the gift of SABR membership (perhaps to yourself) this holiday season. You would have access to several digital newspaper archives, the Sporting News, thousands of pages of research resources, chapters, committees. Its great for introverts or extroverts!

A friend and I started a “classic movie night” a few weeks ago—informally gather to watch an old film. We have met twice, and watched (1) Rashôman, and (2) Citizen Kane. Next up: TBD.

Jane made a bunch of biscotti for “gifts” but then made the mistake of leaving them in the house for a few days easily accessible to people who live here so you can see why it’s actually not my fault.

I made a sale on eBay on December 6. In the previous 10 days I’ve sent two reminders and an invoice. Zero response, complete ghosting. It’s not expensive ($25), person has 2000 eBay transactions and a 100% rating. What/when is next step?

Last evening Jane and I ventured out to the cinema to see Chloé Zhao’s film “Hamnet.” I don’t want to give anything away since I am still emotionally wrung out. But I will remember Jesse Buckley’s performance, most especially this final scene, for the rest of my life.

This card, purchased last weekend, completed my 1955 Topps set. This hobby sometimes involves patience—my next-to-last card from this set was secured in 2020.

More importantly, a joyous Hanukkah to you and your families. 🕎
