A lot of anti-immigration people who say “my ancestors came here the legal way” don’t realize that their ancestors came when an open borders policy was in effect.

Its very true, and also wild to me, because like, as an autistic and queer woman, life 50 years ago would have been even more hellish for me.
"Traditional" and "When life was better" are almost interchangeable themes used by people usually 50+ referring to their own childhood or that of their parents that they grew up hearing and reading about. The same cries every "generation" has: life was better 50 years ago with traditional values!"
It's wild how when people say "traditional" they almost always mean something that was invented by advertisements in the 1950s
