Good idea:
Our goal is to have 1000 SUFS Teach Ins across the US, by 9/30.

*GASP* 😮

We know, it's a big goal.

If you've received tax dollars for your science, you have a responsibility to inform *your* community what is at stake: public health, the economy, innovation, and America's global leadership.

If federal scientists don't have freedom to publish what they think is correct, then fed science is dead.

Science depends on free speech—free speech for all, not just for rightwing contrarians, as Bhattacharya and his rightwing allies want.

We must protect scientists' free speech rights.
"Officials from federal institutions have requested the withdrawal of articles supported by federal funds, citing concerns that they address politically sensitive topics such as transgender health."

Yes. This study will also be used to destroy the currently-excellent reputation of NIH and its supported work.

Scientists, the time to fight back is now. If we let these anti-vax studies happen without us loudly saying they are crap, it will sink us, all of us.
Please do not fall for the completely disingenuous argument being forwarded by RFK that the vax-autism study is necessary to convince the public.
This study will be conducted by quacks and the “findings” promoted by charlatans. It will be an Astro-turfed political operation to platform antivaxers.

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

In case anyone is wondering why Musk is so obsessed with USAID it's because it was anti-apartheid:

I must not be wording this right. Lemme try again.

There is only one (1) office (not even an institute) at the NIH dedicated to women’s health research. That office is now being dismantled, with only a bland landing page remaining on their website. This is a five-alarm fire!

If you can go, go. 5pm today. Last night's cutoff of federal funding by 47 doesn't just mess with the recipients, it violates the Constitution and seizes powers that belong to Congress. It's a dictatorial attempt at consolidation of power in the presidency.

I strongly support the NIH Diversity Supplement Program. Addressing the severe lack of diversity among biomedical researchers improves the quality of research. It's not a level playing field. This program helps restore equity through mentored training. Rescinding this program is a big mistake

The NIH 'woke' definition of diversity includes disability and disadvantage - homeless, foster system, Pell eligible, free-lunch program, food stamps, raised in rural area or one with shortage of health professionals..those of us without connections to encourage or support a path to science careers

The NIH doesn’t define diversity merely around race, either. I, for example, would qualify because I meet two criteria: received free and reduced lunch for at least two years as a child and am the first generation in my family to attend college.

I can’t think of anything more *inefficient* than dispatching someone who knows fuck-all about how research actually works to “trim the fat” from the integrated, collaborative network of scientists who are *already* operating on a shoestring budget.

“why aren’t my feeds full of fiery rhetoric from Dems excoriating these EOs and appointments?” you ask

you have to go to their wall to see that and it will not be offered to you in the feed

Kamala Harris has posted more than ten times in the last two weeks. My feed has offered me 0 of those posts.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH**

** Grant reviews now all canceled

Egg prices are soaring again. Here’s why and what to expect
Bird flu has killed millions of hens in recent weeks, shrinking the supply of eggs and hiking up prices at grocery stores.
