The origin of zombie fiction, like the origin of fae, is fear of a powerful amoral monster entrapping its victims into doing its will

It's interesting that as corporations became exactly that all-consuming all-deceiving monster, zombies and fae lost their original themes of enslavement and contract

I feel like a traitor saying this, but I actually think it's both/and. Academia's entrenched hierarchies, with tenured profs refusing to be in solidarity with grad and contingent laborers in any real way, seemed like arcane infighting 20 years ago, but hypocrisy has consequences.
Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

Make an economy where being a dirtbag is a viable lifestyle option, and you create a society that, as a side effect, allows people to create cool shit.

An economy friendly to dirtbags is friendly to *everyone* with a weird cool hobby.

Weird how our AI-boosting government is killing the IRS's free tax filing tool, only for the company who spent $3,720,000 on lobbying last year to sign a big AI integration deal for their tax software. Probably a coincidence.
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.
