I was a teenage boy once. More recently than Farage was. A working class one, in an impoverished, deprived, isolated community, that was 99.6% white.

Genuinely never heard any of my friends/peers ever express an iota of admiration for Hitler. Because even if they *were* racist, they had limits.

Critics of renewables often point to land use as a reason not to invest in wind & solar. Land use IS a real issue for all energy assets incl renewables (unless on-site).

But what critics conveniently forget is the huge land impact of fossil fuels. Aerial view of fracking sites in Wickett, Texas. 👇

Impassioned plea for more mixed-methods research (quant & qual) from @timharford.ft.com

"The hard data is never as eloquent as a good story. Humboldt would measure the cactus but also sketch it; drag his barometer up a volcano, but spin a yarn about the epic climb."

The UK’s problems aren’t caused by immigration
It’s not hard to see how so many came to worry about the issue. But the data isn’t there

For the last hour, Sky News has been almost wall-to-wall on migrant hotel protests... or as chief correspondent Jon Craig puts it, 'illegal migration'.

They desperately need some real news.

You've GOT to be kidding me!

The Conservatives - who oversaw every single thing on this list - are trying to claim that only the Conservatives would "stop the madness" - that they created...?

So incredulity aside, what about the list itself?

Let's go Debunking! 1/34

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

Prohibitions are not spells.

Law is not magic.

When you prohibit a thing, all that means is the thing may be attended by different legal consequences than before.

The thing is not extinguished by a mere prohibition: it can continue but in a different way with different (and unforeseen) effects.

1 in 3 doctors were born overseas.

1 in 2 builders were born overseas.

1 in 6 nurses were born overseas.

1 in 4 transport workers were born overseas.

1 in 7 UK business founders were born overseas.

1 in 5 university academics were born overseas.

The UK would be screwed without them.

There are ~33.93m cars registered. Approx 100,000 car fires a year.

So P(fire any car) = 100,000/33,930,000 = ~0.0029

There are ~1.36m EVs. 232 is the fig the Torygraph gives for # fires.

So P(fire EV car) = 232/1,360,000 = ~0.0002

So a regular car fire is >10 times more likely than an EV.

We know only a little about why Spain and Portugal's blackout occurred on Monday, but enough to what went wrong and what should have happened but didn't.

The Telegraph recently ran a headline:

"More than one million foreigners claiming benefits."

Sounds shocking, right?

But what does it actually mean?

Let’s have a look!

If food production was genuinely a concern then we wouldn’t be using so much of our best arable land to grow malting barley for making alcohol.
