Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

now’s a good time to stop talking and listen.

As we discussed
the pandemic’s early days
a friend said
he misses when people
were baking sourdough,
and another friend said
she misses when people
could work from home,
and another friend said
they miss when people
were still trying
to take care of each other.

Today, I will do a damn good job of educating the youth of my community in spite of a state and a nation that wants me to cower.
Folks, you can't report the United States to its manager. There's no superhero coming to save us.

We don't need one giant act of heroism. We need millions of small acts of solidarity. Help one person in your community for nothing in return. Then, do it again. And again.

That's the revolution.

The last political column I was allowed to write in the @washingtonpost.com was a criticism of Obama.

His people took issue with my piece, but we were respectful.

Now he is tweeting in support of me.

This is how free political speech and respect for debate *actually works*.

Or used to work.

"Can they truly be so ignorant to the words of a man they have so rushed to memorialize? I don’t know. But the most telling detail in Klein’s column was that, for all his praise, there was not a single word in the piece from Kirk himself."

I’m weary of the ‘closing schools during pandemic hurt kids’ garbage. The true hurt is that 1. money was not invested in helping to mitigate the harms 2. Nobody listened to teachers telling us what the actual harms were.

After the latest round of grading papers, I wrote about AI, ChatGPT, the death of the student essay, and what it means for the future of human cognition.
The Death of the Student Essay—and the Future of Cognition
One professor's reflections on the end of an era, as AI tools such as ChatGPT have murdered the student essay (RIP). Here's why that threatens the future of human cognition—and how to save ourselves.

A scientist told me
the real story
is the unfolding of climate change.

And a doctor told me
the real story
is the ongoing pandemic.

And an activist told me
the real story
is the rise of fascism.

And a historian told me
the real story
is that these are all the same story.

AI is the ideal technology to accompany the decline of America.

It caters to the entitled, to those who have no desire to learn and think they know everything, it destroys creativity and critical thinking, and lays the cultural foundation for fascism.

Assigning Sen. Thurmond’s “longest filibuster” of the Civil Rights Act to the dustbin of history is a powerful part of the story.

Because no matter what, that’s where they’re all going, no matter how hard they fight it. Men who fight the future are the most foolish of all men.
Cory Booker will break the record for longest Senate floor speech at 7:19 PM EDT. Fewer than 2 hours from now. The record is held by Strom Thurmond, who was arguing for segregation. GO CORY, GO!

Seems to me what we’re seeing across the federal government are the dividends being paid from years of adopting market language to talk about public goods. Run government like a business? Businesses exist to make profit. Government exists to serve the people. We’re about to see the difference now.
