— Medical transition is classified as medically necessary. It's not something your trans friend can simply put aside for a while in the event of something you personally think is a greater crisis. That's like trying to cut out the expense of glasses by just coercing the wearer to close their eyes.

— Trans women don't have an advantage over cis women in sports. Every conceivably sport-related part of our bodies is changed by the hormones we take in such a way that it becomes like it would be in cis women. Statistically, we actually tend to underperform.

To everyone in a similar scenario: the tactic my doctor's office has taught me is to ask, in writing, for:
1) the name, board specialty, and license number of the doctor making the determination the treatment was not medically necessary;

Give NOAA a $222 billion budget. Boom, $2 trillion saved. The doggy boys can go back to playing Diablo III.
For your situational awareness, every $1 spent on NOAA yields $9 in benefit to the US economy.

At first they circulated freely with the ducks in the barnyard, and it became clear that Jerry was happier with his new ducks friends than with Tom and the ducks were perfectly at ease with this new member of their flock. Tom found his own turkey tribe eventually, while Jerry just loved the ducks.

around 42% of all marriages end in divorce. that is a very high regret rate for people committing to life changing decisions. the state should do something, ultimately we should ban marriage entirely

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.
The Mystery of Food Deserts
They didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened.

My absolute favorite part of the dead salmon wearing trend (scientists are, as the article says, reasonably sure it's a fashion trend) is not that orcas have fashion, it's that they, too, have the occasional wave of 80s nostalgia.

I have had to ask WAY too many people not to do this lately, so a reminder: "unroll" and "thread reader" apps are content theft. Please do not use them on other people's content unless you know they're okay with it. I am not okay with it.

They say it’s not what you know but who you know, but increasingly, it’s who knows YOU — if you have some employees who can become Known without suffering professional consequences and others who can’t? that has baaaaaaaaad cumulative effects over time.

when you stop reading "believe women" as "women never lie" and see it as "one of the foundational myths of patriarchy is that women can never be trusted" it makes a lot more sense.

Why this really matters:

Most misinfo research *assumes people care about epistemic motives & interventions are based on this*

Our work highlights the importance of understanding when misinformation is likely to be driven by *feelings* so accuracy interventions are less effective

I love you and I want you to start your mushrooms in a dry pan. DRY. Med-high heat, flip when you start seeing beads of water on the faces of 2-3 slices (3-6 minutes depending on your stove & recklessness). 2-3 more minutes, then add butter/oil (&garlic/herbs if u want), 1-2 mins. Finish w salt.

It's a goose, but it reminded me -

TIL that the reason we call ducks "ducks" in English... is that they Duck.

The verb came first. We had the concept of ducking, and then saw this thing that ducked underwater, and went, "Fucking Brilliant. That's a Ducker."

I need people to not “also this other thing I’m thinking about” this important point. AIDS, and the Reagan-Bush admin’s lagging response to it, took so many of our best and brightest, and of so many who had yet to shine
if your "why do gen x and boomers suck so bad ideologically" analysis doesn't include that cool people in those generations disproportionately died of AIDS you are blinkered
