I'll be visiting this conference next month in Fukuoka. They're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Japanese history department at Kyushu University and I'm really looking forward to seeing many old friends and mentors again.

Just got back from Hokkaidō, which inspired me to look up Ainu manuscripts for #ManuscriptMonday. Here's Stepan Krasheninnikov's 1738 "A Glossary: Latine-Ainu-Chukchi-Koryak-Itelmen," an early record of the Ainu language.

A collaboration between the V&A; Art Research Center, Ritsumeikan University; and the Sainsbury Institute has allowed nearly 2000 old Japanese books to be digitized and catalogued.

Caroline Gill has been working to translate the Japanese cataloguing info into English.

Today I learned that Aichi Prefecture had a local "great merger" in 1906, that slashed its number of municipalities roughly in half. This flew completely under my radar until now.
