I am Canadian.
There is no coming back from this for America. Trump will be gone at some point and the world will remember that Americans, especially the American government, through compliance, flaws in the law, or apathy did nothing to stop this administration from wreaking havoc on the world.

A “swearing in” should obviously be completely ceremonial, and should have no legal weight at all.

Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.
