Hosted a meeting yesterday w/ building industry & emergency professionals on what rebuilding might look like. Planning similar for an East Side event w/Altadena focus. Who are some community organizers I should reach out to? Caltech folks monitoring air/environmental? Insurance advocates, RE agents?
I called that 3 letter hotline which detains people. I called twice and got a message to report tips thru their online portal. The third time I got thru, and the voice on the other line sounded decisive and impatient. Both banal and freaky to be on the other side of so much power and authority.

Several star architects announced Tuesday morning in a NY press conference to say goodbye to reinforced concrete.
Not without melancholy, Jngels: "It's remains a fantastic material, but in times of climate change, data is clear, we need to focus on renewable materials and renovation now." Dezen.com

#volunteers: architects, planners, land-use, housing advocates: I’d like to plan a volunteer day in LA for pros to donate a few hrs of their time to meet w/ homeowners for “counter” reviews of their home. The scope would be constrained, No Design, general guidance, milestones, insurance negotiations

LA architect Michael Kovac and his environmentalist wife describe how they built fire-resiliency into the design of their home. One stood out: they had a system to squirt fire retardant on their home on-demand.

I know 2 families personally who lost their home (so far). As I reflect on the magnitude of loss from the perspective of a house design professional, I feel quite uncomfortable: so many people are in a world of pain as they come to terms w/insurance, limits of capital and the construction ecosystem.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

1.5 million people without power. Thousands newly homeless. At least five confirmed dead.

But LAPD felt salty about being useless and overfunded and now all the focus is about “looting” and “crime prevention.”

Built:LA has a map of building ages from 1890 to 1908. Note the upper development was mostly built in the 1970s and 1980s, but more were added in the 1990s and 2000s. Adding homes up and up the canyons
