haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Our friend Peracca's Plump Toad is a very rare species of toad who lives in the Andes of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador! They are one of a few toads who are born directly as small toads and do not have a tadpole stage! (photo by Augustin Bussac)

Shout out to cough drops. If cough drops are secretly bad for some reason, I don’t care, don’t tell me, I’ll be mad if you tell me.

In case there was any doubt, the actual list is also embarrassing all on its own. Just a bunch of If Books Could Kill style airport book nonsense and Wealth of Nations (which he definitely hasn’t read)

So-called “small talk” is not aimless, and people who claim to hate it are often interminable boors. Engaging in small talk with folks - friends, strangers, people you’re working with for the first time, service industry employees - is an essential responsibility for making societies feel connected
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Samuel Beckett is one of the funniest writers of the 20th C and if you don’t think so, that reflects a dour, performative seriousness on your part that exhausts everyone around you

There was a tweet going around a few months ago that was basically “AnyAustin’s whole thing is that every one of his videos invents a new genre of video and then instantly perfects that genre” and I agree and think you should watch his stuff

Real shanty-heads know that all it takes is a few solid heave-hos and we’ll be back in port before you know it
remember that one-week period a few years ago when sea shanties were a huge cultural phenomenon?

has any trend burned so bright and then disappeared so quickly?

And a lot of the people who think they’re pros (often people who *are* pros) get a little high on their own supply and forget that lots of forms of writing benefit from those structures for pragmatic reasons.

Breaking the rules just for the sake of breaking the rules can make writing worse.
Yes. You've gotta learn how to write with strict structure before you can learn to write without it.

I think a lot of people who become pro writers were precocious bookworms with bookworm parents and don't actually need this the same way average kids do so are maybe blind to this
I mean, the teachers surely know this. The structural conventions kids learn in high school English are training wheels for people learning how to write. Which most students at that stage need, even though skilled, mature writers almost never write like that.

My suspicion is that rather than the left being worse at hiding or suppressing our humourless dogmatists, what's actually going on is taste makers find leftist humourless dogmatists more irritating because more influential on their emotional and professional lives. So they get complained about more.
