WE ALL WANT IMPOSSIBLE THINGS by @catherinenewman.bsky.social is so good. Life-affirming and silly (complimentary) and poignant and hilarious. A perfect combo of totally realistic moments + a pleasingly determined narrative arc. Overuses italics better than anyone in the game.

Earlier this year, @msjpauly.bsky.social and I spent tens of hours speaking to trans kids and their families about their lives under Trump 2.0. Now is not a bad time to re-read it.

💙📚 Finished THE STARVING SAINTS by @caitlinstarling.com today. What a thrill of medieval/speculative/horror fiction, and the tension between the 3 narrators was 🤌🔥

In my head, it was in convo with a fave, Jemisin’s THE FIFTH SEASON (harnessing elements, reform v. abolition, throuples).

Most discussions about “misinformation” treat the problem as if people simply don’t have good enough critical-thinking skills. It sounds intuitive, but it’s not entirely accurate. The problem isn’t just individual ignorance, it’s the structure of the information environment people are placed into.

FACTORY GIRLS by Michelle Gallen was such an immersive read, full of feeling (rage, grief, fear, despair, and optimism laced with trepidation) and humor. Maeve is a protagonist who will stay with me. The Troubles-era brew of colonial & class violence worth remembering #booksky

“Warfighting” as murder for profit seems to be what’s happening now re: Venezuela/alleged narcotrafficking boats in the Caribbean.
In the opening statement, William Crandall said, “We went to preserve the peace and our testimony will show that we have set all of Indochina aflame.”

War is hell, yes, but beyond that, US militarism is a project of “investing in murder for profit” (in the words of an antiwar ad of that era).
