Me coming out of the woodwork to
complain again about journalists covering studies about media from non media studies scholars without asking the right questions. (Haven't read the full study so I am reserving judgment on that.) From the jump there are issues, Flintstones is not a kids show.
Study: For 60 Years, Kids' TV Cast Boys As Doers And Girls As Passive
New research reveals that the language in kid’s TV is reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes, and that little has changed in 60 years.  In some cases, it’s getting worse.

My son decided to dance at the end of the Trolls Band Together movie in front of the screen (we were the only people in the theater). Now he insists we stay until the end of the credits every time so he can dance. I sincerely wonder if this will habituate him as a credit watcher long term.
@alissawilkinson.bsky.social on staying to watch the end credits:

"There’s no right answer here. But in an age in which human labor — especially on movies made by huge corporations — is being systematically devalued, you might want to. You may even want to clap." www.nytimes.com/2024/11/25/m...
Should I Sit Through the Movie’s Closing Credits?
The film has ended, but the names of the many people who worked on it are rolling across the screen. Do you stick around?

Can we please just have this pop up every time chatgpt is opened....signed everyone who grades
In the past day I’ve heard two people who really should know better say they asked ChatGPT for factual info.

ChatGPT is not a search engine. It is predictive text based on other people’s stolen writing; its whole job is to make stuff up. Please do not ask it for facts. Tell a friend.
Don’t know what to buy your loved ones for Christmas? Just ask ChatGPT

My Beautiful Wickedness is always one of my favorite readings to assign grad
students. I tend to have a lot of students coming from post-positivist traditions so it is paradigm shifting in many ways. Looking forward to adding this video to the mix.

spoke with Bustle for this excellent essay on tradwives and the political implications of influencing!

Are Tradwives Luring Women To The Right?
Much has been made of young men swinging towards Republican — but Gen Z women are growing more conservative, too.

I can't get over how much voice search adds accessibility to technology for young kids. from upstairs I hear my kid telling the remote to find Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur from across our streamers. It gives him, not yet able to really spell, so much media choice independence. Also pts for taste.

I feel like videogames actually do provide a pretty accurate representation of real life right now because a lot of videogames are like “THE WORLD IS ENDING” and then you just collect herbs and pretend nothing is wrong

My son told my father I liked "smooth jazz" (for the record no - Melody Gardot is not smooth jazz) and he did not because he liked "real jazz." My son is 6.
Okay okay, let’s turn the tables, folks: when were you roasted by your KID for your music taste, rather than your parents? Shared a couple of examples here and there but I’m sure there’s more.
100% this. me trying to play a Redd Kross song for my then 7 yr old "yep that sounds like something YOU would like..."

Leaving work last night I ended up chatting with a group of former students. A terrible film I had seen came up; one student immediately looked up the box office, another replied "I want to know the budget", a 3rd asked how long/where it was out, & wailed its gonna make a profit. So its not all bad
