Weird but true: electroconvulsive therapy is sometimes used as a salvage therapy for super refractory status epilepticus (ie, seizures persist or recur after 24 hours of anesthetics). It’s all low quality evidence, mostly case series, but this is true of everything so far down the algorithm.

State psych hospitals all have these decaying composite tiles in the floor because they were built at the same time and never renovated. They break easily into sharp fragments and patients will use them for self harm, swallow them, etc. Somehow this keeps happening and nothing is ever done about it.

People have this idea that the neuro ICU is mostly patients in persistent vegetative states. In my experience this is far from the truth. Depends on institution but many patients are admitted for monitoring after thrombolytics, elective neurosurgery, autoimmune conditions with a good prognosis, etc.
