Technology is grand, but all the CGI adds on the ice and boards for the Nashville-Pittsburgh hockey game in Stockholm are kind of distracting.

Partially because Swedes don’t care about UPMC, but also the odd blur anytime people skate over the ads (which is anytime they skate).

Is the University the work we engage in learning and research or of it the management of assets and debt?

With many universities, those who hold power are so removed from the actual work of research and learning, and so their decisions tend to protect capital.
One of the most important lessons you have to learn about what a university "is" is a very vulgar marxist distinction between its *managers* (directly or indirectly appointed by capital and/or state government) and its *labor,* who come to the university out of love and idealism.

If I had a dollar for every time I was told by the University something wouldn’t be possible because UC Path couldn’t handle the change we proposed, I could buy you a decent lunch.
I could go on! I haven’t even mentioned UC Path!! The point is, something is deeply and structurally wrong with the leadership of this university, and the victories you hear about come in spite of them.

Watching hockey right now - and UNC Health sponsors the Canes enough to get their logo on the ice at the Lenovo Center.

University hospitals and healthcare centers sponsoring sports teams encapsulates so many different problems.

So proud that @ucaft.bsky.social stood in solidarity with every other UC union to fight for the university we all deserve.
BREAKING: In AAUP et al v. Trump (wall-to-wall union lawsuit challenging the administration’s unlawful use of TItle VI to reshape the University of California system), the faculty and staff of the UC system WON!!!

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org

I was talking to a grad student today about how being in a flow state for searching can end up in unexpected rabbit holes.

Looking for historical maps of West Oakland led me to question the existence of Emeryville and read about the history of the Oaks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oaks_Pa...

Remember that time I said I didn't like ultra bright, blinking bike lights because they hurt my eyes and lots of cyclists asked why I wanted them to be less safe (without considering that I too ride a bike most of the time)?

That's when I knew this place had the juice.

Biggest climate news nobody's talking about: California is "rethinking" its 2035 electric vehicle mandate. Right while Gavin Newsom saunters around Brazil telling the world to follow CA's lead on climate.

So much for Gavin Newsom's electric vehicle mandate
California's leading the world on climate. So where's California going?

I was in a bad mood this morning because the DJ played a Beatles song on the radio.

But then I lead a bike bus for Ruby Bridges Day, and the celebration at my kid's school was really joyful.

Silly question - do you need a key to start an electric scooter?

Rather than admit Flock represents an untested tech w/unintended consequences, OPD and enabling Council members are rushing to trap public in a contract that will increase in scope over time. But unlike other jurisdictions, our local media is helping them.

The judge's ruling in a Skagit County case could affect dozens of Washington police departments using Flock technology.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

Do you remember when Google Scholar changed its weighting so that high school essays were in the top results?

That was a fun 6 months.

When UC issued the TPM policy, it was obvious that it would be used to silence protest and dissent on campuses.

A cardboard bug to protest racists and fascists coming to campus is now “felony vandalism” is evidence that the Free Speech Movement is just campus marketing now and not our values.

I'm always astonished by the differences in publishing behavior across disciplines.

Engineering faculty often will have author credits 10 articles in a year.

Planning is usually just a couple.
