Every cinephile in Australia wanted to be David Stratton. His passion was infectious – and his legacy lives on
Every cinephile in Australia wanted to be David Stratton. His passion was infectious – and his legacy lives on
The beloved film critic was learned, approachable, feisty and fiercely funny – and his contributions to cinema in this country are immeasurable * David Stratton, esteemed Australian film critic, dies aged 85 * David Stratton, legendary film critic who championed cinema – obituary For a long time, every cinephile in Australia – myself included – wanted to be David Stratton, the beloved critic who has died at age 85. And not just because that would involve being paid to watch and talk about movies – Stratton, of course, being beamed into lounge rooms across the country with fellow critic Margaret Pomeranz. We wanted to be him, aspired to be him, because of the values he represented and the manner with which he held himself. Stratton was deeply learned but approachable; polite but at times wonderfully feisty; and above all else deeply passionate about film. That passion was infectious, and his contributions to cinema culture in Australia are immeasurable. Continue reading...

My new open access article looks at what this says about changing aesthetics, ethics & industry in TV documentary, with close scene analysis.

I listened to Triple J from the day it launched in Melbourne and it’s interesting to think how many of these songs were never in rotation yet here they are dominating #hottest100. How far it’s shifted.

The takeaway from the Venice Biennale saga: the art world faces deep and troubling structural inequality
Creative Australia has reinstated Khaled Sabsabi and Michael Dagostino as the creative team for the 2026 Venice Biennale – after facing much criticism.

It’s staggering to think the answer to the question of why this travesty occurred is “more managerialism” not “champion and support artists”. Not to mention the fact that the funds used to pay the consultants could’ve been better spent on art.

Thanks @beneltham.bsky.social
Spot on from @beneltham.bsky.social in @crikey.com.au.

Creative Australia's crisis management may have been substandard but the real issue was its staggering lack of judgement and courage, an unforgivable absence for which no-one has been held accountable.

Some good news. Thanks all who steered Creative Australia towards this outcome… the only honourable one I think. And yes, thanks to the artistic team for their grace and perseverance.
"This decision has renewed our confidence in Creative Australia and in the integrity of its selection process," Sabsabi and Dagostino said in a statement on Wednesday.

Good to see the right outcome in the end, and a very generous response by the artist and curator.
