You have to love each other.
You have to defend each other.
You have to fight.
I saw The Pit And The Pendulum from 1961 tonight. Here's a secret: I don't like horror movies. Most of the just leave me cold, but every Halloween I watch some and try to see why so many people like them.

This movie was kind of fun, but probably not scary by modern standards....

I saw Kickboxer (from 1989) tonight, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Quite a change from the film noirs!

It's cheesy but also awesome. For an 80's kid this movie goes down like Pringles - you know it's not real life but every moment is so fun. And Van Damme's physicality is incredible.

I just saw Laura from 1944. Now this is a great film! A much better film noir than Gilda, and a great mystery. It really makes you think, and just when you figure you've solved it the plot twists and throws everything into confusion. Definitely my kind of mystery. The whole cast is great.

It ended well. I scooped out the awful stuffing, then fabricated the turkey, breaking it up into parts. Then I vacuum sealed most of it and left enough for a Thanksgiving meal.

Now I can cook three more meals from the bird, plus the bones for soup.

Hope you all enjoyed your holiday.

I just saw Gilda (1946), and it was okay. Not spectacular, but well made. This was the film that made Rita Hayworth a superstar, but oddly enough she didn't strike me as a femme fatale. Maybe a mild gold digger, but not the kind of woman who makes you lose your mind like Glen Ford does.

Black Star Rising by Frederik Pohl

Pohl is a favorite author of mine, and this is one of his more underrated novels. From 1986, it's the story of what happens when aliens make contact with a post apocalyptic Earth and demand to see the President of the US. But there is no US anymore...

...but I knew that would offend him, so with many heartfelt thanks (and after buying quite a few comics from him) I accepted the drawing. It's Moon Night with the Joker in the background. It's really beautiful...

...but it looked like they were singing. The moth seemed to be leading them. It's pretty cool that so many people had the courage and imagination to make all those costumes.

And here's a photo of a weird thing that I wondered about for all three days. It's an old military satellite receiver antenna

...make the goats roll their eyes! If I was the cosplay judge she'd get the award. She told me that even her dress is based on the one Maria wore in that scene.

As I was leaving I saw the Expo had gathered nearly all the cosplayers together to film some kind of video. They were far away...

While the panels felt a little lacking, the cosplayers were everywhere! There were strolling through the crowds in all kinds of disguises full of imagination and life.

The lady at the end there is Maria from the Sound of Music. Her box is three dimensional and the puppets are real! She could even..

...Darwyn Cooke adaptation of The Score, a Parker novel, for $12! That's going be wonderful reading.

Another big score was a bunch of Kitchen Sink reprints of Will Eisner's The Spirit! I went to a seller's stall to take a picture of Gabby Hayes Western for... reasons, and there was a big pile...

In between and after the panels I roamed the convention floor and haunted the comic book dealers.

There were even more wonderful cosplayers everywhere today. I did see some comic ones, but didn't get their pictures.

After that I saw my first big Hollywood celebrity of the con: Christopher Lloyd. He's a really interesting actor with an incredible career. Imagine being part of so many classic movies!

But while he was cheerful and willing to talk, he seemed to be quite forgetful of names...

It's not really a duel, of course, since both pictures are equally good. But we get to see the artists work as they answer questions. Then the drawings are raffled off. And I won this drawing of Poison Ivy by Sami Francis! She's a really talented artist. Look at all the detail

So it was a great day

There weren't any celebrity panels today, probably because of the cancellations. But that was okay, because it meant I could go to the comics panels and not have to worry about conflicts. And I spent more time with the comics dealers! I scoped out all their locations, and bought Howard The Duck #2.

There were many fascinating characters scattered amongst the crowds. Totoro was particularly friendly. It's incredible how good the costumes are. Even up close the details look realistic.

But I personally had a wonderful time. It was a really excellent day, and I enjoyed myself tremendously.

I felt pretty nervous at first, but after working through all the hoops they make us jump through to activate our badges, I stepped through the doors into the biggest adventure of my year.

I saw Octopussy tonight, for the first time in decades. It was fun. A little cheesier than For Your Eyes Only, but still real enough for some thrilling scenes like the sequence at the end with the plane.

A lot of people say the plot is confusing...

I just read Escape #1, by Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña, and... holy cow, what an amazing book! This is the start of an incredible story.

Today a young bun decided to eat some of the leaves on my apple tree. The apples weighed down the branches enough to give him access if he stretched. The really funny part happened when he missed and hit the branch, and the branch recoiled to bump him. The bunny reared up and started to box with it!

By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth! What abomination in the Marts of Wal be this? Chicken Donuts?? Chickens bred with holes in the middle???

Apologies for the glare. Even my phone camera didn't want to get too close to this one.

I finally got to read a DC Finest collection! First up is "Supergirl: The Girl of Steel" and it is a TRIP. Even for the Silver Age the stories are out there, since every one of them turns on Supergirl using her powers to deceive someone. 1/2

Went by the pawn shop that burned down in Feb. It's a lot worse than the news implied. Half a block totally gone, including the businesses to the left of the pawn shop. Even the trees were burned and dead. There's a safe lying by the fence, you can see it in this photo. The burn smell still lingers.

I saw Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl tonight. It was fun. Not as fun as The Wrong Trousers that this is a sequel to, but that may have been the series high.

The Norbots ARE funny tho, so that's most of the heavy lifting done right there. They capture that uncanny valley feeling really well.

Last fall a small falcon called a Merlin visited my yard, for the first time. Today it came back, about five months later! I'm pretty sure it's the same bird, since it landed on the exact same stick.
