You have to love each other.
You have to defend each other.
You have to fight.
I'm confused about exactly what's happening with the US government shutdown, but it sounds like 8 Democrat senators made a deal? And all they got was a promise there'd be a VOTE on Affordable Care subsidies?

So they gave up just like Trump wanted, and got nothing. All that suffering for nothing.

About 5 years back Fox put out a really interesting TV show called Next, that was about a team of characters trying to stop an AI from secretly taking over the world. The concept and some of the characters were quite fun, but the show suffered from the things most network TV suffers from...

I went outside to do some last minute leaf picking-up, but got surprised by early trick or treaters. 4:20 in the afternoon!

So I left the leaves in piles, put all my stuff away, ran back inside, got the candy and turned on the porchlight.

Now it's been half an hour and not a soul out there. Sigh..

Holy shit. This is a video by a guy on YouTube who does crazy stuff for laughs. In this video he subscribes to ChatGPT and lets it drive him insane. Sort of. He's in on the joke, but he still does everything it tells him to do.

I saw The Pit And The Pendulum from 1961 tonight. Here's a secret: I don't like horror movies. Most of the just leave me cold, but every Halloween I watch some and try to see why so many people like them.

This movie was kind of fun, but probably not scary by modern standards....

So, the (provincial) government is using the Notwithstanding Clause of the constitution to force the teacher's union back to their classrooms. Specially they're forcing the union to accept an agreement that was already rejected.

I'm not a lawyer, but doesn't this make ALL union law null and void?
Alberta uses Charter’s notwithstanding clause to order striking teachers back to work | Globalnews.ca
The move puts the Alberta government on a potential collision course with more than 350,000 workers in other provincial unions, which have promised an “unprecedented response."

I know you're talking about modern conservatives, but you got me thinking about my Dad. He grew up on a farm in the 20's and seemed to always want to go back to it. He told me so many stories, and many of them sounded horrible. 1/6
Not like I'm saying anything anyone sensible doesn't already know, but these pastel nostalgic wishes for a return to agrarian life glosses over how grueling those lives were.

If I wanted a return to the good old days, it'd be to a time you could make a good living writing short stories...

I saw Kickboxer (from 1989) tonight, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Quite a change from the film noirs!

It's cheesy but also awesome. For an 80's kid this movie goes down like Pringles - you know it's not real life but every moment is so fun. And Van Damme's physicality is incredible.

I just saw Laura from 1944. Now this is a great film! A much better film noir than Gilda, and a great mystery. It really makes you think, and just when you figure you've solved it the plot twists and throws everything into confusion. Definitely my kind of mystery. The whole cast is great.

It ended well. I scooped out the awful stuffing, then fabricated the turkey, breaking it up into parts. Then I vacuum sealed most of it and left enough for a Thanksgiving meal.

Now I can cook three more meals from the bird, plus the bones for soup.

Hope you all enjoyed your holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Now I've got to cook the turkey. I'm a little late, but it's particularly challenging this year because I bought a "stuffed" bird by mistake. At the moment I'm leaning towards taking out all the disgusting stuffing and roasting it whole.

Here's hoping all ends well!

Holy cow, AI is a HUGE bubble. In a properly functioning economy the law would step in at some point to stop the round-tripping, but in Trump's America...

In other news, after the last Windows update there's a CoPilot Agent continuously running on my system. Thanks?

I just saw Gilda (1946), and it was okay. Not spectacular, but well made. This was the film that made Rita Hayworth a superstar, but oddly enough she didn't strike me as a femme fatale. Maybe a mild gold digger, but not the kind of woman who makes you lose your mind like Glen Ford does.

Black Star Rising by Frederik Pohl

Pohl is a favorite author of mine, and this is one of his more underrated novels. From 1986, it's the story of what happens when aliens make contact with a post apocalyptic Earth and demand to see the President of the US. But there is no US anymore...

Just listened to The Adventure of The Muskgrave Ritual from Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection.

It was all right. A middle of the road Holmes story. The best part is the introduction, where Holmes gets out of cleaning by engaging Watson's curiosity about an early case...

I saw a father and daughter in the grocery store today. A man in his 30's-40's and his little blonde daughter, obviously Ukrainians from their speech. We're all at the checkout. The little girl is running the father a little ragged, as children do. 1/2

Edmonton Expo Day 3!

Unfortunately my carpal tunnel flared up while on the bus. It happens infrequently. If I'm home some Tylenol and a heating pad will deal with it, but on the road there was nothing at all to do but bear the pain, which was considerable. I'm afraid it colored the day a bit...

Edmonton Expo day 2!

The day started with a panel celebrating 50 years of Captain Canuck, the superhero created by Richard Comely in the 70's. The Captain has the distinction of being the most well known truly Canadian comic character, self published in this country and not owned by a US publisher.

But I personally had a wonderful time. It was a really excellent day, and I enjoyed myself tremendously.

I felt pretty nervous at first, but after working through all the hoops they make us jump through to activate our badges, I stepped through the doors into the biggest adventure of my year.

Today (Friday) was day one of the Edmonton Expo. At least 12 guests cancelled before coming, and at least four cancelled THE FIRST DAY of the convention. That's enough to sink an event of this size, but the planners planned well, and there's still guests here. But it'll be quieter than expected
September 20, 2025 at 7:18 AM
One more day until the Edmonton Expo!

It's the only convention I can go to, so it's the highlight of the year. I've gone to every Expo since they started in 2012. There are a LOT of memories and amazing experiences all tangled up with that event.

I've been slowly preparing for weeks.

I'm favoriting a lot of comments mentioning different Robert Redford movies tonight. The man made so many incredible films.

I'll probably watch The Sting. I'd like to see some of his lesser known movies like Little Fauss and Big Halsy or The Electric Horseman, but they're impossible to find.

This is something I truly don't understand. Not only are the Republicans "shutting down" the war on Cancer, they're wrecking the careers of a generation of researchers and attacking science itself. Why do this? Republicans get cancer too.

I saw Octopussy tonight, for the first time in decades. It was fun. A little cheesier than For Your Eyes Only, but still real enough for some thrilling scenes like the sequence at the end with the plane.

A lot of people say the plot is confusing...

They were the same age both times, but in the Bronze Age they lied about it.

There's no way in Heaven, Hell or Metropolis the Curt Swan Superman or Clark was in his 20s. And Bruce was about 35, but he was 1955's idea of 25.

They just lied. To children. With the approval of the Comics Code.
