When people ask how those without access to systems of power might combat the rising fascist tide — think of graffiti. The radical orgs of the 70s knew this. It’s visible, it sticks in the mind, it establishes the presence of the speaker not as an individual but as a representative of the collective

AMC Theater employees, be for real: are your families being held hostage? Is that why you’re trying so aggressively to upsell me at the concession stand?

If you think about it, the richest man on earth stealing the personal data of private citizens and working to illegally dismantle systems that care for the world's poorest and most vulnerable people is also a kind of violence.

I think an American flag created entirely by black men at the Superbowl is one of the best pieces of art I've seen in my lifetime. I hope it actually killed some folks. And I hope it finally closes the fucking book on the argument that we shouldn't use the flag to fight the God damned fascists.

I was a meeting today and someone made a reference to “mental health and poetry,” and I thought they said “mental health and poultry,” and now I’m wondering what that would include.

Hey it's me, Sonic the Hedgehog!

Today may be scary, but now it's up to us to be the heroes we need to see in our communities.

Our institutions and elected leaders have failed to prevent this moment, but if we work together to stand up for our friends and neighbors we can make a big difference.

If you feel like you're watching the culture disappear into something unrecognizably grotesque and cruel, you're not crazy, you're not alone, and now is not the time to lose your values or your voice.

The families who will be most brutalized by what's to come will need them.
For those feeling hopeless and too young to recall, this is exactly the kind of story that proliferated when Ronald Reagan swept into office and then in his second term too. It was exhausting and gross at the time, an orgy of celebration of the very rich: www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

It is deeply frustrating and confusing that a city with so few truly pedestrian-friendly spaces would allow the ones they DO have to be degraded in this way. The wear and tear of those vehicles on those surfaces create additional cost burdens for taxpayers too!
Despite what you see in this photograph, this is a pedestrian passageway at Civic Center Plaza in Memphis. There is barely room to walk between the cars. Our city and county governments say they prioritize public spaces and walking, but then this - a government employee parking lot on the sidewalk.

in 2020 I watched a documentary on the 1918 flu pandemic. I'll never forget this quote:

"as soon as the dying stopped, the forgetting began"

"it is in the individual memory... but not in our collective memory. that's the greatest mystery to me—how we could have forgotten anything so horrendous."
Also jarring to me that we've never had any real collective mourning in the USA.

More than a million Americans have died of Covid and, barring some very isolated moments, there's been no sense of coming together to mark the incalculable loss. No events. No monuments. Etc.
It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...
