I saw the new Gladiator movie last night

The title card sequence that looked like gen AI slop followed by a logo reveal of 'GLAD II ATOR' caused emotional damage

with a lot of these people are going to go a decade of institutional knowledge that our industry has not properly invested in turning into tools, documentation, books, or anything that can be properly passed down.
in a time of unprecedented layoffs, many game developers are struggling to find work. some, burned by an industry that has exploited and abused them, are leaving games entirely. but it's not as easy as you'd think. fantastic piece from @lukeplunkett.com:

Still not over the contrast of a modestly growing industry and the absolute carnage of closures and layoffs it has undergone in the past couple years.
July 2024 U.S. Video Game Market Highlights from Circana - Projected U.S. spending on video game hardware, content and accessories reached $4.8B in July 2024, gaining 10% when compared to a year ago. 2024 year-to-date spending is now 2% higher than a year ago, at $32.1B.

game devs seem really good at recreating high stress environments that feel like they have no end. they must do a lot of research to nail down such an unfamiliar feeling.

Dead internet theory feels more accurate every day. I'm so tired of content mill SEO farmed slop articles being recommended to me. Articles do not need to be 6+ paragraphs recursively saying the same thing until you land on your point in the last paragraph. It makes me feel like I'm having a stroke.

Crow Country is the exact kind of game I needed this weekend. What a delight, and an achievement for indie dev SFB Games.

Investigating the ruins of the Crow Country amusement park and solving puzzles scratched the itch in my brain that was craving an old school survival horror game.

The original Dead Rising, released in 2006, was one of Capcom's first forays into a next-gen HD experience. Not everyone who played it liked it or even understood it, but hey, now we're in a post-Souls world where roguelikes and repetition are much more accepted. Give Dead Rising another go!
Retro spotlight: Dead Rising
The first Dead Rising was one of Capcom's initial truly next-gen HD offerings, and, not to make you feel too old or anything, but that was 18 years ago.

Acrylic on Canvas - 42" X 31"

On the day I finished this, I brought the painting to the frame shop to show it to Audrey. She was busy with a client, so I left the painting on a table and went to get some lunch.

“All of the designers of the original Super Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo Entertainment System are credited designers on Super Mario Bros. Wonder [38 years later]… That kind of tenure is almost unheard of… and I think this is crucial — you need to feel safe to innovate.”

Boeing is a great case study in what happens when you pivot from "We are a company that makes (airplanes, cars, widgets, etc)" to "We are a company that makes shareholder value."

My favourite thing about Emperor's Tomb is the manual. It's done in a wonderfully in-universe Grail Diary style with schematics of the console you're playing on as if it's some ancient artefact. It's just chock full of characterful stuff and feels like a really special thing.

🕹️ Bytes of Gaming History ⌛

Through the timescape lens today, we can see Toys R Us circa 1999-2000. A time when N64 goodness stretched as far as the eye could see, and stacks of PlayStation could be found. But watch out, Dreamcast is sneaking in from the left!

It's ironic reading rumors about Disney considering "getting back into" gaming by potentially buying a publisher when they had some REALLY GOOD studios and even all of LucasArts after their purchase...and they gutted them

I think it's pretty nuts that 30 years in Blink-182 was able to drop one of their best albums ever. One More Time is one of my top 3 Blink albums. Chock full of bangers.

I got a Backbone to test remote play and scope out if it's worth getting a PlayStation Portal. It's pretty cool but I think unless the Portal has some secret sauce to it, I'm unsure about how viable it is for any kind of action game. RE4 was off juuuuust enough to be kinda meh.
