We now have the details of the federal 2026 budget proposal, and it spells the end of IMLS. The request is $6,000,000 to "conduct an orderly closeout of IMLS."

Whatever happens in the 2 court cases would be moot if this passes.

People who live in the next town over who have been saying they’ll defund their library and just use our library are SO MAD to find out that they aren’t allowed to just use other towns’ libraries. IT ISN’T FAIR!

Email addresses for all IMLS staff were being disabled today. Those with questions or concerns over IMLS funding will no longer be able to reach the individual or individuals with whom they’d been working.

The Institute for Museum and Library Services Was Just Gutted
DOGE fired all IMLS employees and closed down their emails. It is assumed all funding for 2025 coming from the federal agency will not be happening.

In this post Kelly provides great list of easy steps you can take: sign the EveryLibrary petition, call your senators + reps (use 5Calls!). Protect our state libraries, tribal libraries, interlibrary loan, digital equity, vital grants to libraries of all species... 📣 And please spread the word!! 📣
"As nice as it is to support your local library right now,... those steps will not make an impact on fed-level threats like this. Continue to do those things, but know that it is your responsibility as a citizen in a representative democracy to speak up + w/ your fed level legislators right now."

All grad admissions offers rescinded at my institution, UMass Chan Med School. There is just no alternative. It’s a terrible loss for students. But it’s also a loss for all of science. Science *runs* on grad student labor. They get paid pennies to do highly skilled work. Science can’t function w/o
This is my institution. These are the people I work with making these decisions. The situation is heartbreaking. Public medical schools have no other choice; there is no other source of funding, and everyone in academia is at extreme risk right now.
