I met my daughter, an undergrad at U of T, for coffee at the Royal Conservatory before teaching the first class of Poetry II (winter) in the School of Continuing Studies, U of T. After the class, a student said, "You're so passionate about poetry! It's great to be taught by someone so passionate."

Feeling heartache over the loss of brilliant Andrew Pyper. My condolences to his family and our mutual friends. He had a great working relationship with my late husband, Gregory Sinclair, who commissioned and produced Oracle for Audible Canada. A career highlight for Greg, an international success.

Friendship as good fortune. Mark Strand was at my house when author/editor's copies of the anthology HISTORY OF HEARTBREAK arrived. In one copy, all the pages were blank. Make it an album of friends, Mark said, and made the first entry in a book I've come to treasure.

A fine piece to read on your next

break.
Sad, today, to hear of the death of the Frank Auerbach, one of the great post-war painters. Auerbach once said: “I wanted to make a painting that, when you saw it, would be like touching something in the dark” — I wrote about the poetry of that here: someflowerssoon.substack.com/p/on-not-mak...
