Eating after illness fucks with your perceptions of what is an appropriate amount SO MUCH. I just paused & thought “oh wow I’ve been eating non-stop, I should slow down to not overdo it” and it was 2 apples sliced up and 2 boiled baby potatoes. 😐

The Ig Nobel is incredible , one year an Indian guy won it for calculating the average surface area of an elephant and during his acceptance they had an elephant hold up a sign with the surface area of the scientist on it, they do showbiz better than the Oscars
Video: a Japanese scientist was attacked by flies while giving the acceptance speech for his Ig Nobel Prize-winning research paper that proved painting Zebra-like stripes on cows led to a decrease in biting fly attacks.

Stumbled upon this in my photos and it seems so incredibly fitting for these times we find ourselves in.

SIL is safely delivered, nephew is perfect, v grumpy and with an impressive head of hair. Gave us all quite the scare (made worse by my internet choosing this time to disconnect me while I sat here and panicked) but both mother and baby are doing fine.

I accidentally over-achieved in a language exam yesterday and today, the chickens have come home to roost: forcibly promoted to a much, MUCH harder class. I have appealed for clemency. (& more grammar practice.)

I am awaiting the delivery of new bookcases on Friday. I will then spend the weekend reorganising my books. Jealous? Don’t be! You, too, can reorganise your books this weekend. Think of it! Books! In a new order! It’s almost like actually reading them…

Enjoying a long-overdue week off with family, lazing around Lake Como. The scenery is spectacular, and food is amazing, and the weather is - thankfully - replete enough with mountain breezes to make sleeping possible.

I believe the phrase “Lord give me strength” was coined for days such as this. I am a grown-up, I can get through this without throwing all my toys out of the pram. Even if no one else seems able to do so.

Please keep all fingers and toes crossed for me, I’m awaiting paperwork and breathing deeply that nothing happens to derail things last minute.

What a perfectly normal and not at all horrifying thing to write from the perspective a 12 year old girl who is expecting to be killed by the bad guy and who just met ‘Harry’ an hour ago.

Anyway, thankfully everyone is now reading horror, which is making everything better. I was having SUCH a bad time with everything I read turning out the opposite of what I wanted, that I have instead opted for books where everyone dies. That way, if I get pissed off at a character - problem solved!

Well, NYC is still averaging 27C. It’s fucking October. When will the temperature drop to bearable levels??

No no no, I refuse to accept a reading slump. I only just managed to get over the last one!

I really, really don’t want to be travelling this weekend. More or less hyperventilating about it. Like that “I don’t want to go to work” feeling but pretty much looking at the whole country I guess.

I need to write a cheque for something, and I have discovered that I can’t find my chequebook. Assuming that I have a chequebook. How the hell does one get one (1) solitary cheque written out these days? Without waiting two weeks to get a whole bloody chequebook, that is…
