If you want* to read Frederick Douglass's speech "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?"--a clear-eyed yet profoundly hopeful inspection of the gap between U.S. ideals and U.S. reality--you can read it as it was first published at the Internet Archive.

* Yes, you do.

Isn’t it fun?

If you’re near a dairy, they often get their disinfectant in barrels or totes. See if you can make some friends?

They’ll often give barrels for free, the totes they might want a few bucks.

Wouldn’t use them for drinking water, but storage for garden water? Absolutely.

With heat plus humidity you’d be liquified fairly quickly. Out here in arid/hot south west, mummified is a definite possibility.

I’ll take our wet bulb temps over anywhere with significant humidity. Out here it doesn’t get horrid until well into the upper 90’s, especially if you’re in shade.

Prevent child heatstroke deaths. A child can die from heatstroke in minutes.

From NHTSA: A sweltering heat wave is affecting millions of Americans this week. 🔥🌡️ Protect yourself and your child in the back seat! It's NEVER safe to leave them alone in a vehicle.

This is how quickly a car heats up.

To this day, I bring at least a dozen frozen water (32oz) bottles in a cooler when I head out for errands. Safety for me, but also to give out to any unhoused people that are nearby.

Old(ish) from arid/hot SoCal, bitd we had school 365. K-8 had no ac except the library, bc they were built before they went all year. Eventually they went to only 8a-noon classes June-Sept. But it was still miserable bc we walked to/from. Heat illness several times as a kiddo.

Heat is no joke.

2️⃣ So much dust

Yes, this is probably related to the dirt under the nails problem.

Right now, CA weather is perfect, so all the windows are open. 50° nights, 75-85° days.

Will most likely grab one of my air purifiers from the pods and see if that helps.

1️⃣ Dirty fingernails

So far, almost 60 days in, I have had the displeasure to almost always have dirt under my nails. I keep them short. I wash hands frequently. And yet my nails always seem to collect a layer of ick within moments.

Completely baffled atm.

5 years ago seems so much like yesterday. One of those years I can remember where I was/what I was doing on at least half the dates… was also a *fantastic* year for tomatoes…(2021 & 2022 was the rat apocalypse!)

Be proud of your job. Show your face.

Wear your ICE hat when shopping for groceries, at the mechanic when you need a car repair, and at church. Swap stories about your job with other parents at PTA night & at child care pick up. Engage with your neighbors.

Scared to do it? Reconsider your choices.

lol, ty for the double take moment.

Aside from no cell signal and trouble for internet, it was still in 9b, but sunset 15. And 60+ inches of rain a year… and 20° cooler summers than down here in southwestern Rivco.

Big sad.😢

Yeah, the whole group of us are *highly* disappointed. 100 acres of redwoods, a decent stream and the Eel river on two borders, with many rv pads…it was just about perfect. And who knows, we may still get it. The sellers are just a little difficult and it’s been “for sale” for 5+ years.

Ah, I didn’t know you’d moved too. I only went 15 or so miles in same general sunset zone, so should be able to ramp it up like I had it with the tiny yard. I miss all those fatty caterpillars.

So jealous! Due to the move to the land and then my 6 week trip up north, I don’t have any milkweed planted this year… have to search the area here and see if there’s any patches in the wilds. 🤞
June 20, 2025 at 6:50 AM
Almost 6 weeks without any cell service and no ability to use starlink on the land (too many GIANT trees), it’s a trip heading back into crazy SoCal. My phones dinged for at least 30 minutes once they got service.

The iPhones satellite texting worked if you could find a satellite…

Been a crap month for little disasters. Glad you’re just sore! Pls report to Dr any weird delayed symptoms (especially headache/more neck pain).

Warm showers/baths can be heavenly with anti-inflammatories. Ice things if it feels good. Heating pad is also helpful.

Car did well keeping you around
