Since you all love #Oddsock. He has a statement.

"My human is at risk in UK only because she's autistic. Here we lock up autistic kids & adults for decades for no reason - 2500 of them right now & we do nothing about it. No dog should lose their humans this way. This is what should be trending"

Anyone else autistic have that thing where people in real life really think they REALLY know you? ⬇️ Thread 🧵 I have really 3 settings

1. I like you and you know as I've told you and I really like you. This doesn't change over time or distance at all.

I'm just going to point out again what I keep pointing out with AI.

From a Equality Act perspective in education your on really shaky ground. Disability and Neurodivergency is rarely even considered, bias is bad & people will start to take legal action

Prevalence of bias against neurodivergence-related terms in artificial intelligence language models
Given the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in many decision-making processes, we investigate the presence of AI bias towards terms related to a range of neurodivergent conditions, including autism, ADHD, schizophrenia, and ...

AI in education is obviously not just a technology but something that different groups interpret and construct in various ways. I thought I'd have a go at characterizing them:

The semiliterate people who use chatgpt like to point to calculators as a precedent of assistive technology but the thing is: calculators actually calculate.

A calculator really does let you outsource calculation. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and marketed as doing, reproducibly.

You think LLM-based chatbots can help students learn? Think again.

Take a few minutes to listen to Dr. @drtanksley.bsky.social clear explanation why this is very bad, harmful idea, especially for Black students.

I like to point out that Hannibal (the show) came out *right* before the DSM-5 with the show runner saying that Will has the “opposite of Aspergers” … which really didn’t fit the Autism related DXes in the DSM-4 but *does* in the DSM-5
So more House MD, Meets Will Graham with a dash of Mabel from Gravity Falls . If you want a full Caroline flavour of autistic ADHD.

Equally likely to be brillant, go slightly mad, or shout GRAPPLING HOOK, but I can look cute doing it.

Oh who picked Gaius... hats off @intra86.bsky.social good call ... also on my list.
I feel like the obvious candidates never quite hit the way I think people expect. I absolutely love Abed, Data, and Tina Belcher. But if we’re talking about identifying with on a deep personal level, I think I have to go with Gaius Baltar.

Dear USA.

UK needs teachers, nurses in fact this whole list really...⬇️ I'm pretty sure our system still recognises professional degrees.
ICYMI Dept of Education will no longer considers these professional degrees:

Nursing
Public health
Social work
Physician assistant
Occupational therapy
Physical therapy
Audiology
Speech-language pathology
Social work
Counseling & therapy
Health Admin

A smaller health workforce makes us all sicker

Allowing brands to affect curriculum and indoctrinate students through the very tools students use to learn is disgusting. Google does all it can to make itself not only avoidable but also inevitable. It doesn't have to be this way.
Feeling queasy now I've learned that Google is not only now offering Gemini ambassador certificates to teachers but also awarding students and *children* to be corporate AI mascots. Coercive normalization of commercialized digital education. blog.google/outreach-ini...

I get that some people wanted to put up flags (not really my thing)…

But thanks to british weather they now look less ‘patriotic display’ & more like wet manky dishcloths dangling from increasingly questionable locations and I'm starting to wonder what they are used for tbh... 😳

Full day teaching my hips are dire #EDS. Orthotics sucks, going to have to use my stick more & adopt a House MD vibe.

Which given I said the misathropic phrase to a ECT today "Well I dislike people, but kids aren't full people yet they are kids. I like kids they are honest"

Might be time tbh.

About to go teach and honestly this doesn't surprise me.

The one thing we aren't doing we really need to do adequately fund schools. SLT and SENCos are exhausted, morale at all time low.
This has been my worry all along with the breakfast club nonsense. You can talk about funding all you like, the long and the short of it is that school leaders end up with another job on the list, another extension to their working day, and the job becomes ever harder...
And this is from DfE advice!

Btw nothing in my life makes me more angry than this, it's approx 2025 about now, (goes up and down never less than 1000). Cases of autistics being locked up for 45 years. Average incarceration 4.6 years.

225 under 18s about now.
We are locking up 225 kids ⬇️

A short thread with my thoughts on breakfast clubs. 🧵

It has always been difficult to make wraparound care financially sustainable because of the ratios needed versus the likely/potential take up. It's not just about having the space to do it or about when the school is technically 'open'. 1/4
