Historic Places are the cornerstone of the National Park Service mission, and they (almost) always have been.

No one in my Bluesky circle needs to hear this, but Black history is American history. The Greensboro lunch counter is a place where brave Americans defended freedom and equality against bigotry. It represents my patriotism; it is patriotic to demand and shape an America that lives up to its ideals.
Trump orders ‘ideology’ removed from Smithsonian. What about NC sit-ins exhibit?
We fact-check a report that the Trump administration ordered pieces of the F.W. Woolworth lunch counter from Greensboro to be removed from the Smithsonian Institution.

hi, are you doomscrolling?

So many things are chaotic and unsettling right now. But staying up late doomscrolling will also make things harder. Try to do something offline, go to bed early and charge your phone away from your bedroom. You still deserve time to adequately rest and recover.

P.S. There are avian flu outbreaks in many countries right now, and yet most (I did not say “all” because I haven’t done a survey of the 100+ countries with outbreaks) do not have the runaway egg prices that we are seeing.

This is illegal price fixing. It’s just happening in the US.

I wish more people were talking about egg prices as less of a “muh egg prices!” thing and more about the fact that there is an organized egg cartel that is illegally price gouging and almost certainly illegally price fixing and reaping massive, gigantic profits.

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

The new Trump administration has illegally removed far more people from their jobs because of speech and beliefs in the last month than the entire list of cancelled or pressured people (many of whom were criticized, not fired) compiled by FIRE and others over years.

It’s not remotely close.
First, the activist ‘overreach’ mostly consisted of low-stakes, cherry-picked anecdotes. The police were not defunded. Words were not banned. White men were not barred from college.

The backlash is responding to the *possibility* of social change, not actual change.

What we’re seeing is not the pendulum swinging back toward the right after the left went too far. We’re seeing a moral panic, a society-wide assault on a phantom leftist who wants to ban Dr. Seuss and arrest you for using the wrong pronouns and put kitty litter boxes in classrooms.

I don’t remember mass action from STEM folks when Jeff Sessions attacked the NEH in 2015 and I’m still mad about it. But. That’s not gonna stop me fighting for the NIH and NSF.
I will happily subsidize STEM research every day. We NEED doctors and engineers. The issue is large scale dismissal of my field, not how we fund.

The current admin is going after medicine and science. If they take us out, too, that's fine. But it isn't the goal of slashing NSF and NIH.

just makes me want to weep. i can’t stop thinking about all of the federal employees and the important jobs they do
"I get to do my best every day to support good jobs for people that really care about collecting, preserving, and providing access to the cultural record . . . in a context where I have job security as a federal employee and where I know the staff and teams I work with have that job security."
