The impacts of enforcing such a ban are dangerous, per experts. Ntm, Wilson has already been sweeping encampments at a higher rate than his predecessor.

Wow, The Guardian worked with Street Roots and an excellent local reporter to co-publish an actually good and nuanced article about Portland. Some other national and international outlets could save a few parachutes and better serve their readers by borrowing this approach.
Trump’s Portland narrative didn’t appear suddenly; it’s more a denouement after powerful interests catastrophized challenges for political gain.Years of oiling the growth machine, even in a city with a progressive reputation, have failed to produce material results for voters.

Here’s some history:
Portlanders mock Trump for calling their city ‘war-ravaged’. But they’re clear-eyed about its problems
Like many American cities, Portland has been struggling to combat rising unaffordability and homelessness

To wit, ICE told Street Roots in June, “There are no changes to ICE operations in any parts of the region based on the riots in Portland,” amid the building being closed to the public.
Federal officials claim Portland's ICE facility closed down due to protests. Even federal judges acknowledged this as true.

So OPB decided to fact check it. Data show bookings at the building never stopped.
Portland’s ICE building closed for 22 days this summer, but immigration arrests and detentions hardly slowed
Justice Department attorneys argue the facility was “inoperable.” Some public functions were halted. Bookings were not.

Jeremiah built a legacy of impactful, thoughtful and thorough work at SR. We’re sad to see him go, but very happy for him and excited for his next act. It’s been an honor to be part of his journey.

NTM, it’s great he’s still serving Portlanders at the city’s 2nd best paper, @portlandmercury.com

It’s my last week at my favorite newspaper in Portland, @streetroots.bsky.social. I’m proud of the work we’ve done the past few years and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Excited to join my second favorite newspaper @portlandmercury.com later this month!

The homeland security secretary visited Portland knowing there was no terror threat, saw the truth, and then accused local and state electeds of covering up terrorism anyway. All of which just an effort to justify military intervention and stifle free speech. It barely cracked the news cycle. Wild.

My latest is a very rare opinion piece. I think it’s time we talk about how authoritarianism works.

“We’ve left the territory where a leader believes he needs any valid pretense for his regime’s actions. The truth is something he determines, not something he experiences.”
Letter from the editor: To tell protesters, ‘don’t take the bait,’ in the face of Trump’s attacks on Portland, both misses the point and ignores the reality many Oregonians face. “This regime isn’t fishing with bait. It’s fishing with dynamite,” writes @k-rambo.bsky.social

Generally chill atmosphere at the protest by the ICE building. Not many people, one bullhorn, someone learning to play guitar. Couple of right-wing streamers/counterprotesters and protesters trading insults from a distance.

Noem has with her right-wing social media personalities David Medina, Benny Johnson and Nick Sortor (who was arrested for fighting outside the ICE facility, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office not pursuing charges). No news conference or opportunity for press to ask questions.
Noem appears to have arrived? Not sure how long we’ll be blocked from the street outside ICE processing facility. I can say unequivocally she did not witness anything she claims is happening at this facility, as she entered the facility…

There’s no need to do the “it’s not war-ravaged and they don’t need military assistance, city leaders said.” You can just say it as a fact, because it is a fact, and say they pointed it out. No need to both-sides reality as the president is appearing to authorize the killing of dissident civilians.
