Whether this was random street crime or targeted political violence, I think it was bad for the president to unnecessarily put the National Guard in harm’s way like this. They simply don’t need to be there.

Words alone are not violence, but an unrestrained government is. If we don’t reckon with what that means for free speech and the health of the nation, many of us could face real violence in our lifetimes. Libertarians and conservatives once understood this.

We're witnessing the most aggressive, fanatical crackdown on free speech in my lifetime. The speed and breadth of government censorship and private sector and nonprofit capitulation has been astonishing. As has the lack of urgency/silence from people who've long claimed to care about this stuff.

We can acknowledge the tragedy of someone's death without pretending to admire them. Just as I wouldn't expect someone to falsely change their views on trans people, don't expect others to change their views of Kirk's work. Civility doesn't require forced niceties. I suspect Kirk would have agreed.

At this point, it's safe to say that the WSJ running with a description of what was written on the bullet casings as "transgender ideology," itself a loaded term, was deeply irresponsible and helped set off days of hateful speculation about innocent trans people.
