Moments ago: tenants of the South Shore apartment building that federal immigration agents raided at the end of September held a presser to announce they're forming a tenants union.

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

More updates TK.

Today, the president of the US wrote a “memo” suspending Congress’ control over appropriations. Also, a Supreme Court justice suggested that maybe congressional laws just “expire” when the Court thinks they’re no longer needed. The Speaker of the House hasn’t commented on either.

The massive agency of secret police wants to vacuum information and build files on Americans to figure out who they should sweep up and remove from the country.

I recommend reading the fantastic book IBM and the Holocaust to think about how tech companies facilitate fascism.

Literally scouring the internet for said data 😭
Counterpoint: there's never been more data available about what the government actually does. Most political scientists just have a soft spot for what happens between peoples' ears.
I’m as guilty as anyone, but it’s sad that we study voters and behavior because that’s where the data is. I want to be bold and study the real small N causes of policy, like Thiel or Musk or smartphones or the libs who boosted JD Vance to stardom

It feels crazy to have a book basically covering several years of what you spent most of your time doing 😭. Hype to read this.
Census 2030 will be the subject of a prolonged political assault. We can learn a lot from what state and local governments and NGOs did to save the 2020 Census. I document those strategies in my forthcoming @univpressofkansas.bsky.social book. kansaspress.ku.edu/978070063875...

The county's probation department said it needs the drones to contact homeless people who are on probation, specifically in hard-to-reach spots like along the American Parkway.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.
