#OnePlaceStudies I've already searched newspapers for boatmen wounded and killed, thought I'd try boatman + prisoner as keywords. Just the year range 1910-1919 gave me over 7000 results🤣😭 Changed it to prisoner of war and still got over 2000 results😱

#GenHour Finding #BoatFamilies WW1 men is down to luck and chance, this article from 1940 was enough for me to find Oliver Jones. Very unlikely I'd have found him otherwise as no service record survives.
#OnePlaceStudies Sometimes finding my #BoatFamilies WW1 men looks like this⬇️
There is actually enough here for me to be able to find and name him - Oliver Jones b1893, KIA 24 July 1916. Remembered at Thiepval.

#OnePlaceWednesday Working on tracing my #BoatFamilies WW1 men, lots to find who aren't in the tree currently. Luckily, between the service record and newspapers for the injured/killed men, I'm mostly able to find them. Got a couple of tricky ones who are going to need a process of elimination. Fun!

A big #OnePlaceWednesday update for my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy - I have added my 1841 census transcription to the website!

Very few of the properties had an address or a name, most just have ‘Common’ as the address. I’ve indicated each separate property with an ‘x’; in some properties ther…

Thank you! I hope the book lives up to expectations.

The challenge is telling those stories - and doing justice to them - while also speaking to the bigger picture. It never gets any easier!

We concur! A #OnePlaceStudy can help you to identify the people your ancestors lived alongside, worked with and for, teamed up with for sports or social events, worshipped with, and associated with in other ways, breaking down brick walls along the way.
Genealogist Elizabeth Shown Mills popularized the concept of the FAN Club. These people often appear in your ancestor’s records and can be key to solving tough questions.
Look for familiar names in land records, witnesses on documents, and census neighbors. Your ancestor didn’t live in a vacuum!

This site is amazing, astonishing coverage. Hats off to the Underwood's for their incredible devotion to recording all War Memorials in Bucks, and Clint for his work on the Roll of Honour.

#GenHour Lots of research coming up for me. Of my 70+ #BoatFamilies men in WW1, 8 are already on the tree and 5 are part researched. That leaves a lot to find! And will probably create more men who served once I find their brothers, brothers-in-law, and cousins. Definitely a long-term project!

#OnePlaceWednesday Using various convoluted methods I've found around 70 men from #BoatFamilies who served in WW1. I think it's time for a spreadsheet, for analysis & for a research log. Should I have started the spreadsheet at the beginning of my research? - yes, shush!

Thinking about the 130 or so British librarians killed in WW1. Their colleagues raised funds to create a lasting memorial to their sacrifice. Sadly, the tablet they commissioned is now displayed behind the scenes at the British Library, visible only to staff.

William Taylor born c1840, not married
Jonathan Holloway born 1856 Oldbury, not married. Jonathan was identified from a photo by his family some days later.

At 4:55 am, on 2nd October 1874, a convoy of five barges carrying gunpowder exploded beneath the Macclesfield Bridge in Regent's Park. The explosion was so powerful that three men died, a boat's keel landed on a house 300 yards away, and animal cages at the zoo were damaged.
