There is actually enough here for me to be able to find and name him - Oliver Jones b1893, KIA 24 July 1916. Remembered at Thiepval.
Newspaper clipping from 1940. Death of Veteran Canal Boatman. Mr. E. Jones, of Whixall The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. Edward Jones, aged 91. at the residence of his son. Mr. Fred Jones, Moss Cottages, Whixall. For many years he was employed as a boatman on the Shropshire Union Canal, spend- ing over 40 years in the Whixall district. In the course of his work he fetched many cargoes of coal from Black Park Collieries. Working with two donkeys, as his father, Mr. William Jones, had done before him, he later changed over to horse power and was eventually succeeded by his son. Mr. Fred Jones. His grandson, Fred Jones, junr., now operates a motor boat. Mr. E. Jones, who retired at 75, was proud of his connection with four generations of canal boatmen. His wife died 20 years ago. One son was killed in the last war and four sons and four daughters survive him. The funeral took place at Whixall Parish Church on Thursday.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 11 Military. The headstone of my great great uncle Major Ernest Valentine Cherry. Ernest died of a brain tumour in service and was buried at Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool. He served during both World Wars at home in a logistics role. Ernest had no surviving children.

Excellent book post today! I am going to be combining my crafty skills with my #OnePlaceStudies skills 🤩 I have already completed a piece of cabin crochet, boatman's belt is next. Will work up to the boatwoman's bonnet, my sewing skills are basic at best so that will be a challenge.

Sarah & Alfred got their own boat, had 6 children, & had a peaceful life.
Newspaper report - CHARGE OF WOUNDING AT BRAUNSTON. Frederick Richard Earl, 26, boatman, was indicted for feloniously wounding, at Braunston, on June 29th, Alfred Barrington, a boatman .- Prisoner pleaded guilty, but said he was provoked, and certainly did not intend to kill the man .- Mr. HAMMOND CHAMBERS said he had advised the prisoner to plead guilty of unlawful wounding .- Mr. SILLS, who prosecuted, agreed to this modified charge .- Prisoner had found the prosecutor in bed with prisoner's wife, and then undoubtedly did assault the prosecutor .- His LORDSHIP said it was not in human nature to restrain oneself with such provocation, and it would not be creditable to human nature had prisoner endured the provocation without being roused. Bound in 20l. to come up for judgment if called upon, and to keep the peace towards Barrington.

Shouldn't laugh at this really, the fear of cholera was very real even in 1849 when this happened but really, William, your breakfast choice was terrible 😆 (not sure about the surgeon's diagnostic skills either!)
newspaper article; THE CHOLERA .- Much excitement was created in this town on Monday evening last, in consequence of a report becoming extensively circulated that a man of the name of William Davis, from Marsworth, a boatman on the Aylesbury Canal, had been attacked by cholera. Mr. J. Ceely, of Aylesbury, surgeon, was called on to attend the poor man, whom he found lying on some straw in a shed adjoining the wharf, and at once pronounced him suffering from the above disease. A van was procured, and the man conveyed to the workhouse, where he was placed in the vagrants' ward, and every attention was paid him. We are happy to add that he is now nearly recovered from the attack. On being questioned as to the nature of the food he had been partaking of, he admitted drinking a pint of milk with his break- fast, and shortly afterwards " enjoying some half-and-half," which he had every reason to believe did not sit well on his stomach, Another man of the name of Parsons, carpenter, of this town, was attacked with the same complaint on Monday last. This man, it appears, was in a state of intoxication on the Saturday night previous, which may, in some measure, account for his illness. He is in a fair way of recovery. Oxford Journal 1 Sept 1849

#OnePlaceStudies Have spent the afternoon tidying up placenames and coordinates in Family Historian. This is the map for the #BoatFamilies. A few random outliers but you can clearly see the route of the Grand Junction Canal and its various arms!

There is a heavy concentration of pins in the London, Northamptonshire, and Warwickshire areas. Outliers are the 2 in Ilfracombe, Devon, 2 in Portsmouth Hampshire, 1 near Canterbury, 1 in Southend on Sea and 1 in Bangor Wales. Plus one in Belgium which is marking the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres for Thomas Hendon 1877-15 Feb 1916.

Yes it seems so and it's getting more complicated... Hannah was also known by the surname KELLY and died at a different address across town from David. And the probate was first given to her 1st husband & then revoked. ( and is KELLY at that address 1911 - of course not!)

#OnePlaceStudies #Genealogy Got to love getting a Will that makes you go WTF?! Hannah Priscilla Thompson's (wife 2) Will only leaves an insurance policy to Clara Fanny Smith (wife 3) and makes her sole Executrix. Further grants and reswears make David the Executor. I'm confused!

#OnePlaceStudies Good news is that now there are 'only' 5 distinct groups of Roberts #BoatFamilies👍 Bad news is that I've got a lot more Roberts and still missing baptisms for most of them - and death dates but that's proving tricky to be certain. And yes there are 8 different William Roberts!

Found it. In this case, the Worster family very well off, the Shaw family kind on the sidelines of the Worster family business and gradually working their way up the social scale. All the witnesses are relatives apart from Thos Cross the Clerk. Definitely a society wedding! #GenHour

Oh yay I've reached the time in the Long Buckby baptism registers that Rev Manning appears. Yes honestly that is his surname and yes all the pages look like this. So my transcription spreadsheet has loads of rows highlighted for me to go back and check names later on.

Emma is in the tree already, so are 2 of the children separately. Now I have to join them up in one family group & then track the other 7 children to see where they ended up. Fully expecting them to marry into other boat families!

Now this is a horrible tragic first for my research. And this is only the 12 children that I know about from baptisms, there may be more. Sadly no burials for the children but their names are now remembered.
