#Art and #science are otterly powerful partners when it comes to #oceanconservation 💙🌊

Creative pieces like this transform science into something you can feel. They draw people in, spark curiosity, and make marine ecosystems more relatable and memorable. #seaotters #oregoncoast #oregon #sandart

When on the Venn diagram, art and science overlap, the area is one of absolute beauty.
I finally managed to make a decent vertical version of my plane refraction #sundial, with a tailor-made stand for the plexiglas cylinder. Hour is read on the north side, by the position of the shadow.
Had to sand the cylinder all around to avoid internal reflections (caustics).

I'm here outside Speaker Johnson’s office because he is starving families and gutting health care to cover up the Epstein Files.

Change my mind.

Why do eagle and manta rays have long, whip-like tails? 🦈 Our study shows that they act like kite tails, adding drag to keep rays stable as they glide!

FCNL’s @hbrandon-smith.bsky.social joined @npr.org to break down Trump’s murderous, lawless strikes at sea:

“What the administration is claiming is that it has the right to kill people who are not firing upon the U.S. … and that it can do this indefinitely without any say-so from Congress.”
Some lawmakers are worried that Trump is dragging the U.S. into war with Venezuela
President Trump is escalating boat strikes near Venezuela without ruling out hitting targets in the country. Lawmakers are warning the U.S. may be drifting toward war without a clear justification.

Today’s GOP pits the sick against the hungry.

🔥🔥🔥 from BTC.
"Republicans could end this right now. They are choosing to make this shutdown an issue where they pit the sick against the hungry. The reality is, this is a false choice. Prior to this moment, we've been able to afford both the ACA subsidies and SNAP benefits."

“Nanotyrannus lethaeus”

I love the … not quite an oxymoron … the contrast built into this name.

Teensy Tyrant
My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

THAT’S what I’m talking about.

Let’s get a Project 2029, with this as one of the chapters.
WATCH: “Are the reforms Dems are pushing for tinkering at the edges of a system that is inherently corrupt and not delivering?”

As Dems fight to stop premiums from skyrocketing, Kamala & Jon Stewart make the case for MEDICARE FOR ALL.

I have tentatively decided that when I teach Administrative Law next semester, I am going to cover Humphrey's Executor and the rest of the casebook chapter about removal powers, until SCOTUS officially overturns Humphrey's Executor (instead of just saying they are "very likely" to do that soon).

Just pondering how many of our current difficulties would disappear in a decade or more if we just had a decent minimum wage.

Also perhaps an unpopular take: providing medical insurance isn’t the same as providing healthcare.

The House hasn’t shown up for work in weeks. They all would have lost their health coverage by now if they were subject to the same bureaucratic work reporting requirements Republicans put in place for folks on Medicaid.

Oh, this is a treasure! Sometimes I feel like I have the entire library of Alexandria in my hand.

If you click on the little four-square icon, you can breeze through the pages and, like me, stop for the plates the ones that have the drawings. My Latin isn’t good enough for the rest of it!
