Neben RSF hat die russische Generalstaatsanwaltschaft nun auch das deutsche Recherchenetzwerk @correctiv.org als „unerwünschte Organisation“ eingestuft. Schon das Teilen oder Kommentieren von Inhalten in sozialen Medien kann für Menschen in Russland strafbar sein.

Abstract: This article explores the relationship(s) between ‘madness’, emotion and the archive in early modern England, taking as its case study the letters of British Library Lansdowne MS vol. 99, sent between c. 1570 and c. 1600 to the government of Elizabethan England and annotated at several stages in their history to describe their authors and contents as ‘mad’. Firstly, by examining the complex history of the archive, it demonstrates the potential for archival practices to bring into focus, and thereby facilitate historical examination of, past emotion. Secondly, it explores some of the ethical and methodological problems of third-party historical descriptions of madness, demonstrating that a focus on emotion – in particular ‘distress’ – offers a more fruitful path to understanding the significance of this material. Thirdly, it explores the Lansdowne 99 authors’ experiences of distress, revealing the ways distressed subjects exercised rhetorical agency when petitioning those in power. It identifies a series of prominent themes: desperation and deservingness; victimhood and persecution; and appeals to status and lineage. Ultimately, I argue that understanding their distress not only brings us closer to marginalised people in the past, but grants us a richer knowledge of past societies and the experience of being human in them.

Black military service in the Americas began in the 1500s. Per historian Peter Voelz, it would’ve been “impossible for the Spaniards & Portuguese to colonize the Americas w/out Africans as soldiers.” Juan Garrido arrived free & served with Cortez, others were enslaved & freed bc of military service.

In Österreich ist eine Gedenkstätte von der Polizei regelrecht überfallen worden.

Die Geschichte der Endphasenverbrechen ist leider sehr reich an Ereignissen.
Eines davon ist der Peršmanhof, wo eine SS-Polizeieinheit im April 1945 ein Massaker anrichtet, auch an Kindern.

Call for papers for the Conflict, War and Violence in the Early Modern World Conference, taking place at the University of Exeter on 30-31 October. We are exploring early modern conflict in all its forms. We particularly seek to unpack the interactions between the more traditional aspects of conflict, such as the political, tactical and strategic, with the more human side of it, including sociocultural approaches that explore experiences, representations and impacts of violence. As such, we particularly welcome proposals that look beyond purely military history and break chronological, geographical and disciplinary boundaries. We welcome proposals for individual papers of up to 20 minutes, or full panels of three to four papers, on any aspect of conflict, war and violence in the early modern period. Speakers might consider, but are not limited to, the following themes: Physical, tactical, operational and strategic aspects of warfare. Martial identities, values and motivations. Notions of gender, race, class and religion. Remembering, (re)imagining and representing violence and/or conflict. The experience of violence, its impact and the everyday at war. Popular allegiance in early modern conflict. Maritime violence and naval warfare. The bureaucracy of conflict, finance and the law. Abstracts of up to 300 words, along with a biographical note, should be sent to earlymodernwar@gmail.com by Friday 5th September.
