Arm Vlaanderen anno 1850 roept het beeld op van dramatische boerenromans waarin met de moed der wanhoop gewroet wordt op het veld. Maar die romans vertellen niet dat onze keuterboeren al deel uitmaakten van een geglobaliseerde wereld. Noch dat stront daar een verrassende hoofdrol in speelde.
