In Male Fantasies (1977), Klaus Theweleit read personal letters of Freikorps members to show how the violence at the core of fascist masculinity escalates as their fear of losing control grows. They get more extreme when confronted with potential “feminized” accountability for violent domination.
Really unnerving point from Nicole Hemmer, historian of the right: Trump's Epstein fiasco could drive MAGA to push him to go even fuller authoritarian, because the whole project is now in such serious doubt. She's so good on MAGA's future.

Even the international community is warning that the U.S. is acting like an authoritarian state — not a rule-of-law democracy.
The UN human rights chief says US military strikes against vessels allegedly carrying illegal drugs from South America are “unacceptable” and must stop. The condemnation marks the first of its kind from a United Nations organization.

As a German political scientist who used to live in the US I cannot say how deeply disturbing it is to see these masked ICE goons dragging people off the streets, and the GOP building up this massive secret police force. What a shameful moment in history this is.

People at the raided house say they rented it for a birthday party and deny any connection to the gang. One man says law enforcement accused him of being in Tren de Aragua because of his tattoo.

Trump incited attacks against law enforcement. He then pardoned the attackers. Now he says he won’t tolerate attacks against law enforcement. But what he means is he feels very comfortable using force against those who disagree with him. In fact few ideas are more core to his presidency. Thugocracy.

NEW — I’ve obtained audio of new acting FEMA head David Richardson threatening staff in an all hands meeting this morning.

As first reported by Reuters, he told those who resisted change in the agency, “Don’t get in my way…I will run right over you.”

I could be wrong about this but I really think most Americans do not want to be forced to “do their own research” about food & drug & product safety and would rather that the government agencies that have been sorting that all out for them for decades not be obliterated in the name of “efficiency.”

That means they paid a higher effective tax rate than 5 of the richest Americans…and a higher effective tax rate than 55 mega corporations.

We need ideas like this. We've got to put all constructive thoughts out there, long odds or not. If we don't, we guarantee they won't materialize. So thanks @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social. Maybe this'll get a few Republicans thinking harder about history than their next election.
Four R senators and four R House members could announce they're caucusing with the Dems for now, and will vote for Schumer for Majority Leader and Jeffries for Speaker, because the threat to the rule of law is dire. Meanwhile, they'll work with Democrats to construct guardrails against dictatorship.
