The area of Gaza City in white was heavily damaged by the incredibly intense bombing and shelling of fall 2023—what we all saw photos of at the time, like Mosul or Grozny but worse.
The much more thoroughly destroyed belt in black—which is .5 to 2 miles deep—is the product of bulldozers/backhoes:
